Default Need Seriuos Help

Ok for starters I'm 26, I was born with curly hair but was never taught how to care for my hair. So instead of having curls I just have a thick head of frizzed, poofy hair. I'm am done with my poofy hair and ready to embrace my curls but I have no idea how. I don't know anything about curly hair, don't know the best way to comb it, wash it, how to style it, ect.. I know NOTHING. I need serious help, especially since I have a 7 year old daughter who's inherited my hair. From what I've read my hair is a 2C type. My hair right now is about at my jaw line. I'm in the process of growing it out. Please help, thanks.

Hi, "Elm" and welcome! I have to tell you that the 2c section is a little slow, but maybe you can help get it going. Yes, I know what you're going through, except I have had a few more years of trying to act like my hair was straight. I just quit flat ironing/blow drying last February. I have had some good curly days and some bad ones. Many on this board use the Curly Girl routine which you can find in the book Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey. I will try to find some links for you that would spell it out a little clearer.

Hi and welcome! It might help if you post what you do to your hair so we can help you better. Things like what kind of shampoo & conditioner , how often you use them, what styling products you use, do you brush or comb your hair can all make a big difference in how our hair behaves!
Again welcome and I really hope we can help you !

I use Herbal Essences Shampoo and conditioner for coloerd/permed/dry/damaged hair. I also use the herbal essences leave in conditioner, herbal essences frizz defying spray gel and herbal essences hairspray. I shampoo and condition my hair every few days, my hair is so thick it doesn't need to be washed often. I comb my hair with a brush.

You described your hair by saying "so instead of having curls I just have a thick head of frizzed, poofy hair. " I really think that if you could avoid brushing it you would find you have much better definition and less frizz. Brushing although it feels really good sometimes only make my hair into a huge puffy frizz ball.

I use a wide tooth comb in my hair when it is wet after I apply my gel. It gets rid of the tangles and helps to distribute what ever product I am using. Then I scrunch the waves and curls back in.

I hope this works for you too! Let me know if you decide to try it and how it works out for you! Good luck!

Do you let your hair dry naturally or do you blow dry it? If you blow-dry it, I suggest blow drying it with a diffuser instead of a regular blow dryer. My hair would get really big and frizzy if I used a regular blow dryer, but now that I blow dry with a diffuser and use gel, I get great curls. I don't think they are "crunchy" either.
