How to avoid hair tangling up while styling?

My hair is really coarse and thick, and the only way I can avoid a tangly mess is to comb my hair, then add products. But that pulls out a lot of the wave. If I use too much conditioner, or a heavier one, my hair gets weighed down. Same thing if I use a leave-in to help detangle. How can I deal with this problem? My hair just sticks to itself and looks really messy in some spots. Therefore the wave pattern is disturbed. How can I achieve nice, defined, separated waves without sacrificing volume?
