How to avoid hair tangling up while styling?

My hair is really coarse and thick, and the only way I can avoid a tangly mess is to comb my hair, then add products. But that pulls out a lot of the wave. If I use too much conditioner, or a heavier one, my hair gets weighed down. Same thing if I use a leave-in to help detangle. How can I deal with this problem? My hair just sticks to itself and looks really messy in some spots. Therefore the wave pattern is disturbed. How can I achieve nice, defined, separated waves without sacrificing volume? When you comb your hair, do you use a wide tooth comb in the shower with CO in it? This is what I HAVE to do. I use a pick with the CO in it and wet it every once in awhile to make it easier to comb through, and it works for me. If this is what you do already, then I guess I can't really be of any help
