New 2C needs advice on her routine...

I'm new to naturallycurly.com. A description of my hairtype and routine are below. I just recently started using the Devacare products after my last haircut with a new stylist that I found through this website. My stylist recommended DevaCare No-Poo, and the first time I used it, then followed with One Condition and finished with ArcAngell and AG re:coil, my hair looked great and the curl was really nice. The next time I washed my hair and did the same routine, my hair didn't seem to respond as well and that has pretty much been the story every time I wash it.
Since my hair is very thick, when I wash my hair I use a lot of No-Poo and One Condition. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right, and my hair just doesn't seem to be responding the same as the first time I used No-Poo. I'm wondering if I should alternate No-Poo with Low-Poo every other time I wash, or perhaps I should use a little more finishing products.
Any advice for my type or routine? You can see pictures of my hair if you click on the link below...

my current routine is:
Jessicurl Hair Cleansing Cream
Jessicurl Too Shea! Extra Moisturizing Conditioner

wash twice weekly, rinse with conditioner every other day, deep condition once a week, use demi-permanent hair color (ammonia-free), use hood dryer or air-dry

It never comes out the way they do it in the salon. I think it's a combo of a fresh cut and sitting under the dryer, you just can't recreate it at home! I do like Recoil but it's tacky and can build up. You might want to try skipping the Arc-Angel and use a little more Recoil instead. I washed the other day with TraderJoes Castille Soap, it doesn't have any sulphates and it's rich in natural oils and my hair didn't feel stripped at all. I wouldn't do this every day but once in a while we 2's can benefit! My Stylist says that the CG routine can be altered for wavies we can cheat a little so don't be afraid to shampoo once in a while. I've recently ordered CK (Curl Keeper) and I will post my results with this product it can't get here fast enough! I have a feeling if I like CK I'll end up ordering TWEEK I'm hoping I'll get a sample with my order. Just curious where is your Stylist, what state?

One thing that could be working against you is the One-C. It has a cone (I'll look it up in a sec) in it that wreaks havoc with *some* people. A lot of people do like it though.

Another thing could be the magnesium sulfate in the Re:coil.

It's so hard to recommend products because what works for one may not work for another even when it seems you've got the exact same hair.

My brain is so jumbled right now I'm sorry if I'm all over the place here. My hair is 2C, thick, course, etc. This picture is my hair at it's very best after doing this for 4 months. http://public.fotki.com/kitara5/kitara/jun01-034.html This is a picture from back in April: http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...=Apr29-pm2.jpg I took this a week or two ago: http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...s/IMG_9759.jpg

In that time my hair has gotten considerably softer and more manageable. Now, mind you, my hair does NOT look like the first picture every day.

Where am I going with this? I have no clue. I have a point, I do. I just don't really know what it is. I'll go find a post with my routine and link it.

I think I may have difussed my hair that day. I rarely ever do. I usually end up with a lot of frizz when I do. Ok, off to find that link.
It's true you need to experiment to figure out what your hair likes and doesn't like.

Some peoples' hair love anything and 3 or 4 at a time. Others forgo products entirely and use homemade oils and such.

The first few weeks on CG, I was all over the map trying different products. The problem I had was that my hair was greasy looking most of the time and stringy curls. I was putting too much conditioner, too much product and generally making a mess of things. I start using a couple of *pure* CG products (conditioner and gel) only for a few weeks. I started to see a real improvement within a week. Once I figured out how much conditioner, how much gel, how much plop time, how much scrunching, etc. I started experimenting with different products.

I have found that at least in the summer simple is better for me. I use only two products. I expect I'll have to pull out the fall/winter arsenal in a month or so.

Re:Coil doesn't work for everyone and sometimes causes the problem you're describing. The magnesium sulfate reacts with some peoples' hair in that manner. I can't use it alone but if I use it over CK, it works fine.

As for the shine comment, since my hair started going white (they're highlighted out), I have NO shine left in my hair whatsoever.

List of abbreviations: Definitions of Abbreviations?

I still feel like I'm all over the map sometimes.

I don't do my hair often lately, but when I do, here's what I do.
.
  • Wash ~ Most of the time I scrub with water. When I remember, I use Suave Coconut conditioner to co-wash and roughly once a week or again, when I remember, I use Fuzzy Duck Shampoo. (sulfate free)
  • Condition - I use AOHR or TIGI MM. I comb it through and then leave it in until I'm done washing and then I rinse completely.
  • I squeeze out some of the water with my hands then apply leave - in ~ I use SheaM, GDLI, or KCKT depending on what I'm doing after. If my next step is CK/Biotera gel then I use SheaM. If I'm just doing a pony tail then it's GDLI. If I'm using KCCC then it's KCKT. I comb the LI through right side up and upside down. I don't use a whole lot.
  • Styling products ~ I basically have 2 different paths.
.....[1] CK - I use a lot of it. (6-8 quater puddles) I comb it in, scrunch it and scrunch it some more. I do this upside down and then right side up. I let it sit for a minute. Then I scrunch out as much moisture as I can with the CurlEase towel.

Then I put in gel. Currently it's Biotera, but I'll try new things as I get them. I only use about 2 nickles or so scrunched in right side up.

.....[2] KCCC - After having put about a marble size of KCKT in pretty wet hair I start with the KCCC. I put in about a 2 finger glop on the back of my head. I smooth and scrunch. Sometimes I use a fine tooth comb just on the top layer to get it to behave. I do the same to the sides. I do it all right side up and I scrunch until my hands hurt. I do NOT use the CurlEase towel or any other towel.
  • Air dry ~ takes forever.
  • When it's completely dry I scrunch out the crunch with JC N&S. If I scrunch it before it's all the way dry I get producty looking hair.

Now, I use a DT about once a week or whenever I remember. I use Deva HIH or JC WDT. I put it in overnight. I do an ACV rinse whenever I think about it, but haven't done it in quite a while.
You hair looks close to mine was when I went CG. My hair cannot tolerate the Deva line or anything with MagSulf.

DEL2C,

I am in Austin, Texas-very humid. I'm going to try alternating low-poo with no-poo and see if that helps, and also make sure I'm consistent with the way I apply finishing products-I think that may be part of the reason for inconsistent hair days. Keep me posted on how you like Curl Keeper-I will check out the posts on what others are saying about it. I also have the "rich" trial size set from Jessicurl, so when I get through my Devacare stuff I'll give that a try.

Kitara,

I hadn't heard there were silicones in DevaCare's One Condition-which ingredient is it? I had read about the magnesium sulfate in the Re:coil, though. Your hair looks beautiful in those pictures-so the picture from April is the oldest, and the other two are more recent? If so, I can really see the difference-the newer pictures look gorgeous. Thank you for posting your routine. I will definitely need to look up those abbreviations and educate myself-thanks for posting that link too!

Whatsercurl,

It is overwhelming trying to find what works! Everyone's input is definitely helpful, though. When you say you tried a pure CG approach, does that mean you skip shampoo altogether? Maybe I should back off my finishing products a bit, too. I definitely prefer a simple approach, though I'm not sure the no shampoo routine would work for me, but I'm willing to try!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions-I'll do my homework and will keep experimenting. Keep me posted on your progress as well-I've added you all to my buddy list!

Yes it can be overwhelming. There are some pretty impressive product graveyards from the members of this forum. LOL

I shampooed my hair last year in July to de-cone and haven't shampooed since. When I said pure CG I meant from her original book that said NO cones. Her own products have switched directions a bit as they do contain one (think it's called amethicone). It's water soluble so it's supposed to be ok but as Kitara mentioned it doesn't work for everyone. I wanted to see what would happen if I just followed her Curly Girl instructions to the letter. I still follow the product guidelines (no cones, no sulphates and no alcohol) but my method has been modified (several times) due to input from this site.

ETA: Seems like quite a few of wavies and looser curlies still need to shampoo. I'm not militant about using shampoo, I just haven't felt the need. Lemon and baking soda have gotten rid of any greasy buildup I was ever feeling.

Once the actual product is applied to wet hair in the shower, the aggregate is broken up and each component does what it would ordinarily do. The nonionic surfactant is washed away when the hair is rinsed; the positively-charged amodimethicone and the cationic surfactant are each deposited (separately) onto the surface of the hair. The amodimethicone is left alone, and is thus in its water insoluble state, and it dries to form a film, which imparts sheen and silkiness to the hair. Despite the fact that it is water insoluble, amodimethicone has been found to resist the formation of build up, and most users have reported excellent results with products containing amodimethicone, even if they use a shampoo-free regimen.
