hair too heavy to be wavy?

Does anyone else have thick, heavy hair that weighs itself down? The sides and undersides of my hair wave and curl, especially the ends. But the top, especially in the back, is almost straight. I'm still not good with products, because my hair looks so messy after I put them in I feel like I have to comb . Also the fact that I have to wear my hood because its always either cold or windy here doesn't help. Anybody have any suggestions? Feeling frustrated today.

What you describe sounds typical of wavy hair - close to the head at the top. I have this problem and my hair is thin.

If you don't already, you could try diffusing upside down and/or using clips at the roots to give you some life around the head.

Do you have a microfiber towel? Those are great for using to scrunch your hair after you apply products instead of combing. You could also comb if you feel you to, apply your product(s) and then scrunch with the towel .. all upside down. Then let it air dry or diffuse.

Hope you get some more responses to help you out .

Thanks for the suggestions! I will try what you suggested, I've been avoiding the upside down thing thinking it would make my hair messier when I flip back up, but I should try again!

What about a shorter layers on the top surface of your hair? Not touching the length, just the top.. My hairs gets weighed down too, and loses all volume.

Well today I decided to try harder. I haven't been using products very often because I don't like the stiffness, but its better than being flat in back. So after my shower I bent upside down and sprayed in a homeade mixture of distilled water and epsom salt, then plopped briefly and scrunched with a microfiber towel. The I bent upside down and scrunched in Garnier Soft Curl Cream. Diffused briefly and rushed out the door. Hair much more consistantly wavy today, only straight near the crown. So I just think on dry, cold days in the winter I will have to work at it a bit!
I'm still trying to learn how to use styling products
Thanks for all suggestions!

Yay, glad you're having a good hair day! There's products that don't cause much of a product-feeling. Have you ever tried Aura Hypoallergenic Gel from Sally's Beauty Supply? I personally haven't been able to find a good combo with it, but alot of wavies like it. It has no fragrance and no crunch (or if you do get some, it's scrunched out easily).

What does the salt do? Because I have a lot of the same problem as you, and I'm trying to figure out how to remedy it!
Epsom salt can be curl-enhancing in the right mix, but it has to have something moisturizing in the mix to counter-act the dryness it can cause.

Thanks! Would conditioning well and leaving some in be enough to counteract that, or does there need to be a moisturizing agent in the salt mixture? If the latter, do you have any suggestions?
Another Scenario:

If I let my hair dry naturally, it is practically straight. I asked my stylist about this and she said that my hair is very porous - it holds a lot of water and while it's drying all that water weighs my hair down and pulls out the curl.

I found that plopping is by far the best thing for this, and I also dyed my hair back to it's natural color and am growing it out. Another thing I've done is to comb coconut oil through my hair and twist it into a bun before bed (about once or twice a month). That is better than any deep conditioner I've ever tried.

I think that a combination of coloring, living in Colorado, and blowdrying for 15 years has made my hair very dry. As I treat my hair better and don't let gravity get hold of it when it's wet, it gets curlier and curlier!

Hair is pretty great now that it's colder, now I'm focusing on my skin. Sniffle.
Scrunching with a microfiber towel is working wonders now. I think I have a handle on this problem. It will never be really wavy up in the back like it is in other spots, but I don't care its a lot better. Thanks for all the suggestions!
Now to get good with products! (But not too much because I don't want to be a junky )
