Long hair & parting

How do you do it? Do you do it when your hair is wet? Or do you wait until your hair is dry? Do you use a tail comb or your fingers? Share your techniques with me please!
Type: Course & thick. According to everyone's input, 2c w/ 3a potential.
Color: Brown w/ highlights & annoying grays which I color.
Length: Past shoulders w/ layers.
Issues: Dryness, knots & more dryness!
Poo: Deva Lo-Poo 1 x week, Clarify 1-2 x month
CO Wash: Suave Tropical Coconut (but looking for something else b/c I suspect protein issues)
Condish: GVPCB, LVPNG
Leave-Ins: Was loving KBB Milk & Nectar, but overused them. Usually just leave-in some of what I CO with.
Styling: Biolage Gelee
After I'm done scrunching in all my products, I hang upside and shake my hair. When I flip back up my hair parts. It's never quite the same each time but wherever it falls is how it is parted that day. If I try to mess with it and put somewhere else, with my fingers or a comb, it never turns out right.

Hmmm... That's what I've been doing but it ends up such a mess. All laying funny and what not. Then I tried parting before products and not flipping upside down and it's sooo flat.

Coolshot if your hair is too soft you might be overconditioned. How often are you co-washing? Also what products are you using?

Like jess said, if you try clipping you may get rid of the flatness.

Just out of curiosity are you plopping before parting? If I plop for more than a few minutes I get the flat head problem. And no amount of shaking at the roots will get rid of it. I have to spritz and clip at that point.

I gave up on plopping. I think I might need to try the clipping. Part of my problem is that my roots all seem to blend into one. It's like I can't get any curl formation or even separation at the roots. It's just a tangled mess. And I feel like I have too much hair on top. It all falls forward.

I just got out of the shower and tried the rinse upside down technique, followed by scrunching in my gel upside down. When I flipped right side up it was SUCH a mess at the top (meaning the canopy). And b/c there was gel in it, it all just stuck there. I actually went back into the shower ad reapplied conditioner just so I could run my fingers through it and get rid of all the tangling at the roots. Now it's flat. Ugh.

Maybe you just can't upside down apply and you'll need to use clipping for volume. I have to rinse upside down, scrunch upside down and still clip for root volume. Root volume is something a lot of wavies struggle with. Here is the Deva video and while it isn't step-by-step per say it shows some right side up application of products. It's more of a side to side application.

my hair parts itself in the same spot EVERY time. it's so funny. I don't put stuff in my hair upside down though so I don't really have to worry about the stray hair or two that crossed over.
Jess the Mess... Thanks for that video! I noticed that they apply the gel upside down and rake it through. Is that what you do? If I rake it seems to pull all my wave/curl out.
