Li: CJCASC
Stylers: FSG, SSFHSG, KCCC, CIAB, BRHG

Favorite styling techniques and why: Icequeen - great clumps, shine, good on scalp. Pineapple - muss preventer. Pixie diffusing - less frizz.

I need some help figuring out my porosity so i can hopefully find a hair twin. I read Live Curly and it talked about feeling your hair and if it's very slick it's low porosity and then as I was reading these posts someone said something about hair floating and sinking. Can someone please tell me what that's about? I think my porosity is low, but I'm interested in the floating/sinking hair theory.

Thanks and sorry this is so long.

Livecurlylivefree.com now has a service where you can send in your hair and they tell you your porosity, texture, and elasticity. Your stylist may be able to help you figure out porosity as well. Porosity can be tricky to figure out.

PT: ION effective care, IAgirl's gelatin PT
Low Poo: renpure (red), Ion swimmers
Thanks, I will try the link. The feel test didn't help me much either. I might send in my hair as a last resort.
Curl Pattern: 2b on top,2c and 3a underneath and sometimes around face
Texture: coarse
Porosity: med...I think, takes long time to dry but is bumpy when I run finger over strand
Density: thick
Elasticity: low, normal, high
Characteristics: flat top/no root curl, frizzy without product, bad uneven weird proportion idk what else to list..

HG/Go-to Products: still looking for right products, right now just using gel/mousse
Average climate/dew points: changes with seasons hot and humid in Summer cold in Winter...

Fall/Winter combos:none yet
Spring/Summer combos:none yet

Favorite styling techniques and why:scrunching works for me,my hair needs curl definition or it's just frizzy and ugly, drying with t-shirt,
Techniques that didnít work and why:plopping makes weird curls and flat in some places full in others, twisting thing makes tiny dreads, many things don't work for my hair

Hair Twins:I no no

Curl Pattern: 3a. Sometimes 2 in the very front (probably from combing curls loose..) Annoying s'wavy piece above each ear (doesn't blend in either, grr. ).
Texture: All, mainly fine. I have multicolored hair, I've noticed the darker strands seem to be corse. But the blond strands are fine.
Porosity: Mixed? I'm confused with it because it absorbs a lot of product/water. It dries quickly one day and slowly the next. I tried to color it 2 years ago, it wouldn't absorb the color. And on the water test, it floats. But when I rub up a strand its basically smooth, but it squeaks?
Density: Mixed? There's a lot in the back, so medium/high. But in the front, I would says it medium, possibly low..
Elasticity: I'm not sure.
Characteristics: No noticeable root curl in the front. Easy to straighten in the front, not as easy in the back, still straightens well overall; it gets wavy throughout the day after I straighten it though. Can brush my curls into waves (Over compulsive comber, trying to backoff it though). When I sleep on it, I wake up and some parts are curly, others are wavy. Becomes frizzy easy.

CG/ModCG/not CG: Not CG, yet.

Hair ingredient likes: Silk Amino Acids, Aloe, Shea, Coconut Oil, Sea Kelp.
Hair ingredient dislikes: I don't know.

Hard/Soft Water: Soft.

HG/Go-to Products: SheaMoisture: Curl Enhancing Smoothie (<3), Ouidad: Botanical Boost, It's a 10: LI (Works good for me *sometimes*), SheaMoisture: Deep Treatment Masque (<3), Aussie: Hair Insurance LI, CJ: Coffee-coco Curl Creme Lite.

Average climate/dew points: Right now, it's averaging 47 dew point. I don't think my hair likes this..

Fotki updated 10/12/10 Password: wavy
Rymorg's new thread reminded me that I SERIOUSLY needed to update my Bio -- the old one was pre-CG days.

Curl Pattern: 2c/3a. The waves on the very underlayers of my hair are about 1c or 2a now (shorter hair), but 2bish when longer.
Texture: Medium/Coarse, with some finer strands mixed in my underlayers
Porosity: Definitely low!
Density: THICK!
Elasticity: Low
Characteristics: flat top -- "root curl" usually starts at eyebrow length (sometimes a little higher); tons of different curl types all over my head; prone to lots of poof, fluff, and frizz (and triangle-head ), especially in the back of my head; normally moisture-loving and thirsty (but it's developing a taste for tons and tons of protein); needs help to clump well; fairly strong wave pattern when encouraged enough.

CG/ModCG/not CG: Mod-CG -- I low poo every time I wash due to scalp sensitivities, but I avoid 'cones (although occasionally I will use water-soluble ones).

Hair ingredient likes: In general: Aloe, protein, honey. It also loves oils and butters (coconut and apricot oils and shea butter are by far faves), and my hair (well, me, really ) likes stronger holding gels. Also, it apparently likes Acacia Gum (the stuff in the new Garnier Pure Clean gel), because that stuff is making my hair curl like crazy. It isn't a fan of mousse, but my hair loves a good, goopy, clump-enhancing gel.

Hair ingredient dislikes: Silicones, magnesium sulfate (just discovered it hates this -- really dries me out!), ACV rinses, castor oil, and it wasn't too big on FSG at all.

Hard/Soft Water: .........

HG/Go-to Products: up to 5 products that are constantly in your rotation: Garnier Pure Clean gel, Aussie Aussome Volume Mousse, probably TN conditioners, KMFUM, and EcoStyler Krystal

Average climate/dew points: humid or dry then typical dews: ........

Fall/Winter combos: a LI, lighter hold hold gel, and a strong hold gel on top. Basically, more product layers. Last winter, I think it was LI, La Bella Lots of Curls, and Aussie Instant Freeze on top. I like using heavier products then and more layers. This winter it's SM Curl Enhancing Smoothie, KMFUM, and Eco-Krystal.
Spring/Summer combos: I like either using just a gel (nothing more!), or a gel and Smasters-ing in some LOOB and either SM smoothie or AVG mixed together.

Favorite styling techniques and why: PLOPPING!! I love plopping -- it enhances my curls and takes the moisture out. My hair doesn't look good when I don't plop. I also love pixie diffusing, because it leaves me with less frizz and poof and more defined curls. Icequeen is awesome, too -- I get better clumps.
Techniques that didn’t work and why: Supersoaker -- all the water dragged out my curls. I can't just scrunch with a MF towel and go, either -- it usually leaves me with stringlets. Regular diffusing leaves me with poofy, undefined hair, and I can't apply ALL my products to soaking wet hair (I seem to get no hold or consistency from my curls this way).

Hair Twins: Annilang, Robin-in-FL (?), Oh.hi.its.steph

Curl Pattern-2c/3a, depending on my technique that day.
Texture-Medium/fine
Porosity-Medium
Density-Medium
Charistics: Flat top/no root curl, frizz/coarse hairs at the crown that won't lie flat, tighter curls underneath and more wavy on top, back is not as curly, tends to lose hold even after using the strongest of gels, not the amount of volume I like.
Mod-CG- I low-poo 1-2 times a week or every other week. Try to avoid cones but still use some water soluble ones. (and I've used cyclo-cones recently since I heard they were ok)
Likes: Protein, especially IAgirl's protein recipe, coconut oil, honey
Dislikes: Super soaking, though I'm sure I'll try it again just to make sure.
Very hard water!
HG products: Devacurl ArcAngel, SS FHG, AG Recoil, Bumble and Bumble Holding Foam, Devacurl Set it Free, and KCCC(for SMasters)
Very low dews in winter, higher in summer
Fall/Winter combos- KCKT on roots to calm frizz, CCCCL as moisturizing curl enhancer, AG Recoil, SS CEJ, Devacurl Set it Free, FSG, Devacurl ArcAngel, SS FHG, BRHG.
Spring Routine: CJ CCCCL, Recoil, FSG, Paul Mitchell Sculpting Foam, Joico JoiWhip-I can usually get 3 or 4 day hair out of this, and mousse really makes my curls bouncy and light.
I love plopping! It really enhances curls, I can't do my hair without plopping. Also SMasters technique is amazing, I get amazing curl formation and shine from it. Sometimes I use Icequeen, but lately I've been showering using the technique for wavy hair in theCG Handbook.
SuperSoaker was a fail, my waves did not hold at all... May try it again with more gel. Also rake and shake made my hair stringy... I can't rake product in, only scrunch!
Trying to cut back on product use... CG for nearly 4 months
2c/3a, fine texture, normal porosity, medium-to-thick
Co wash: Vo5 Extra Body
Conditioners: Deva One Condition, GVP CB, Loreal Evercurl
Stylers: Devacurl ArcAngel, KCCC, AG Recoil, Iso Bouncy Creme, Ecostyler Krystal, CCCCL, KCKT
Low Poo: Devacurl NoPoo, GTTT
Hair likes: plopping, diffusing, SMaster's, coconut and argan oil, honey, protein

Curl Pattern: 2C/3A
Texture: Medium/Coarse
Porosity: Low
Density: Thick
Elasticity: Not so sure about this one. Medium I believe.
Characteristics: Hard to straighten. On the dry side, very moisture-craving. Behaves a bit like 4something hair in regard to what products it likes Straighter on top with bigger spirals at the bottom. If I want to I can also make it look looser/wavier.

CG/Mod CG/Not CG: Mod CG! I low-poo, usually, but mix it with lots of conditioner. It's a Co-Poo! Hehee. I also sometimes use 'cones.

Hair Ingredient Likes: OILS. Lots of them. Products need oils in them to really moisturize my hair. All of the conditioning agents, like the good fatty alcohols and such make my hair happy too. Also, it likes silk protein.
Hair Ingredient Dislikes: Proteins in excess. Shea Butter, if scrunched in, gives me awful frizz. But if smoothed in, it's great!

Hard/Soft Water: Somewhere in the middle lol.

HG/Go-To Products: Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine conditioner. I am obsessed. For styling, Garnier Fructis Pure Clean Gel and SheaMoisture Curl Milk!! Lastly, my hair LOVES honey and coconut oil.

Average Dew Points: Mm... not sure. My hair isn't affected by them, so I never really check. Probably in the medium-to-high range. I live in Pittsbyrgh and I never feel like it's extremely dry here, even in winter. It's very humid in spring/summer.

Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer Combos: I get away with the same ones year round! Humidity, dew points, etc. do nothing to my hair. I use all the products in my HG list all year long.

Favorite Styling Techniques and why: Hmm, scrunching generally works wonders. Lots of spirals! I also like the Ice Queen method. Need to try the spritz and condish next.
Styling Techniques That Didn't Work and why: Super Soaker; my low-porosity hair takes soooo long to dry if I add more water! Also, Smasters. Diffusing always gives me frizzies.

Hair Twins: wavynwild16 is the only one I can think of!
whurly girly (2C/3A).
thick; medium/coarse; low porosity.
hair that is drier than the sahara desert.

LOW-POO: Renpure Organics
CO: L'Oreal EverCreme Cleansing Conditioner
RO: Renpure Keratin Conditioner. New HG!
LI: L'Oreal EverSleek Humidity-Defying LI Creme
Styling: SM Curl Milk, Argan Oil for sealing, sometimes GFPC Gel, some honey for hold, TIGI Control Freak Serum!!
Curl Pattern: wavy, with some loose wavy spirals on top and "curlier" spirals in back/underneath
Texture: fine with some medium hairs (the reddish and brownish ones on my blonde head are more "medium")
Porosity: low to normal
Density: thin on sides, denser in back
Elasticity: normal
Characteristics: Tends to lie close to my head. Grows in all sorts of crazy directions. Lots of sensitivities/allergy to ingredients in products. Silky feel, easily weighed down by conditioners.

CG/ModCG/not CG: CG - I use mild shampoos every other day and whatever else works and doesn't itch, I don't play by any rules.

Hair ingredient likes: Protein! (gelatin protein treatment, Neutral Protein Filler, most proteins), aloe, grapeseed oil, FSG, certain herbal rinses (nettle, hops&horsetail)
Hair ingredient dislikes: heavy oils (i.e. coconut, mineral oil), standard (cationic) conditioners too often, polyquats - anything that doesn't rinse clean.

Hard/Soft Water: Hard water, the hardness varies throughout the year.

HG/Go-to Products: Unscented products preferred with no itchy ingredients. Flaxseed gel with additives such as xanthan gum, aloe, protein, oil, panthenol, maybe agave nectar. Kiss My Face Upper Management Gel (sometimes with a stronger-hold gel on top) - this one can itch by the end of the day. If not using shampoo, then baking soda washes followed by citric acid rinse.

Fall/Winter combos: I use the same products year-round.
Spring/Summer combos:

Favorite styling techniques and why: Scrunching in generous amounts of gel, trying to preserve clumps. Diffusing to set in the waves and curls, then air-drying the rest of the way. Clipping the top of my hair and the sides (where scalp starts to curve).

Curl Pattern: 2b
Texture: medium
Porosity: high
Density: high
Elasticity: low
Characteristics: STUBBORN! wavier on canopy, especially in the front framing my face. The part underneath, especially back by my neck, hangs almost completely straight but flips out at the ends. Not easy to straighten OR get any consistent wave from.

ModCG: No Poo 2-3x a week, co wash rest of the time.

Hair ingredient likes: honey, olive oil
Hair ingredient dislikes: mineral oil

Hard/Soft Water: I'm not sure

HG/Go-to Products: KCCC

Average climate/dew points: Dry, cold, brutal, and snowy winters. Hot and humid summers. Chicago throws everything at ya!

Fall/Winter combos: Olive oil/honey mixed into condish makes my hair healhier, but sadly, I straighten a lot in the winter bc I can't get much good curl.
Spring/Summer combos: Still playing, but much better curls at this time of year.

Favorite styling techniques and why: Clipping (I get much better volume), smaster & pixie diffuse (better definition)
Techniques that didnít work and why: Pineapple, plopping (too short)

Hair Twins: I don't have any identical twins, but I think kelnaren and pedadeh are the closest ones I have, especially given my recent experiments with honey & protein.
2B - high porosity, low elacticity

CG steady since September '11

My routine (for now!)
Co Wash: Suave Naturals, VO5, or TJ's
Rinse-Out: 50/50 mix GVP Conditioning Balm & TJ's TTT
Low-Poo: TJ's TTT or Burt's Bees Pom
Leave-In: More GVP Conditioning Balm
DT: Olive & Jojoba Oil. Looking to try coconut soon!
Stylers: KCCC, Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Joico Joiwhip, AVG, LaBella Lots of Curls....depends on the day

...always on the lookout for the next great product/technique!
My hair is weird so everything listed below is subject to change!

Curl Pattern:
wavy
Texture: medium-fine
Porosity: low to normal
Density: normal
Elasticity: normal
Characteristics: Easily weighed down and OC'd. Sensitivities to ingredients in products.

CG/ModCG/not CG: CG. No silicones (even water soluble) nor sulfates.

Hair ingredient likes: Who knows! It is more about what my hair does NOT like.
Hair ingredient dislikes: Aloe, heavy oils (jojoba, coconut, mineral oil).

Hard/Soft Water: Hard water.

HG/Go-to Products: SS FHG, BRHG.

Fall/Winter combos: I use the same products year-round.
Spring/Summer combos:

Favorite styling techniques and why: Scrunching dry with a heavy white cotton t-shirt or oversized flour sack towel. I use LOTS of gel. Diffuse, Clip.

Hair ingredient dislikes: Aloe- instant frizz

HG/Go-to Products: Suave Coconut, GFTN, Deva Angell, AG Re:Coil

Average climate/dew points: It changes by the day! Hot & humid in the summer. Cold and dry, with single digit dews in the winter.

Fall/Winter combos: AG Re:Coil + Angell
Spring/Summer combos: Angell

Favorite styling techniques and why:
Scrunching is a must! Ice Queen, and Pixie diffusing.
Techniques that didnít work and why: Rake and shake: raking gives makes my hair stringy. Super Soaker: also left me stringy, although I donít know why. Plopping/plunking: leaves me with ďdroopyĒ waves.

Hair Twins: ???
Curl Pattern: 2a (can easily get to 1C or 2B depending on the season)

Hair ingredient dislikes: butters

Hard/Soft Water: hard

HG/Go-to Products: Alba Organics Gentle shampoo, Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture conditioner, CJCCCCLite, Jessicurl oil blend. Still trying to find a gel that doesn't make my hair clumpy and crunchy.

Average climate/dew points: Nothing typical or average. I live in a 4 season climate. Right now it is very dry, cold, and dew points are low.

Fall/Winter combos: Not sure yet.
Spring/Summer combos: Not sure yet.

Favorite styling techniques and why: Working on it..
Techniques that didnít work and why: Pineappling (straightens my hair and hurts my scalp), ice queen (doesn't do anything since my cuticle is already so closed off), cowashing (not cleansing enough and leaves my hair OC'ed), supersoaker (my hair doesn't look good in clumps)

Hair Twins: None. It looks something like this:

Hair Biography

Curl Pattern: 2b
Texture: fine
Porosity: medium
Density: medium, maybe slightly on the thinner side
Elasticity: normal
Characteristics: looks much wavier when wet, with no product tends to look more stringy; waves start a little higher than the tops of my ears; wavier than the back than in the front

CG/ModCG/not CG: Mod CG, I've learned my hair likes an occassional low poo, probably every three or four washes

Hair ingredient likes: my hair likes most everything, as far as I can tell; definitely likes protein
Hair ingredient dislikes: the only thing it really dislikes is LALSG, made my waves stringy

Hard/Soft Water: I'm assuming hard because it's Atlanta water

HG/Go-to Products: KCKT for how light it is on my fine hair, the combination of BRHG + KCCC, and my diffuser

Average climate/dew points: In Atlanta, it's definitely pretty humid in the summer and reaches closer to normal/low dews in the winter

Fall/Winter combos: BRHG + KCCC is the only one I've found so far
Spring/Summer combos:haven't been CG in the summer so I don't know yet

Favorite styling techniques and why: Icequeen worked okay, haven't tried much else but my absolute favorite is pixie diffusing, it makes my waves much tighter; plopping for a short time works better than a long time
Techniques that didn’t work and why: haven't had much bad luck with techniques so far but haven't had great luck other than pixie diffusing

Hair Twins: pretty much identical to msg, but would love to have other hair twins PM me if you think we're hair twins

Hair Biography
Curl Pattern: 2c/3a
Texture: Fine
Porosity: medium
Density: high
Elasticity: medium
Characteristics: tends to get limp by the end of the day, but other than that, my hair seems to be very cooperative- straightens easily (especially since I have someone else do it ), curls at the roots

CG/ModCG/not CG: Mod CG- I re-introduced a sulfate shampoo once a week before PT/DT.

Hair ingredient likes: protein!
Hair ingredient dislikes: My hair has not yet been unhappy with anything I've tried. Either I've been guessing well or my hair is just very easygoing.

Hard/Soft Water: water is definitely on the hard side, and I prefer it that way

HG/Go-to Products: Re:coil, GFTN (I'm a horrible PJ and still wading through a ton of new stuff)

Average climate/dew points: New York- hot, humid summers, cold winters

Fall/Winter combos: Still figuring these out
Spring/Summer combos:

Favorite styling techniques and why: Plopping and diffusing for curl definition, pineappling (not so much for 2nd day hair since I wash everyday, but it's the most comfortable thing for me to do to my hair while I sleep)
Techniques that didn’t work and why: scrunching my hair with a t-shirt- breaks up the clumps too much (but I still use this technique when I'm running late for work)
