so this is week 4 of my mod CG and I think i'm starting to figure out my hair properties. I already looked for my hair twin in the hair biography and the only one to come close hasn't logged on in over 6 months.

Curl Pattern: 2c with a strait underneath & a section on top that is like a 2a.

Texture: fine/medium

Porosity: having a bit of difficulty with this one. The strait layer under my hair is def low. but on top from sun and straitening i can see visible chunks missing out of some of my strands. does that mean its high?

Density: my pony tail is right at 4 w/o my bangs. So i'm assuming thick.

Elasticity: normal, but the strait underneath will break with the slightest tug, so low.

Characteristics: right on top has some difficulty with root curl, but the rest of my hair does it just fine. more 2b in the front with that one section that's almost strait. lol. my hair will straiten (significant difficulties on my crown its like fingerwaves close to my head) but after about half an hour my waves start coming back.

CG/ModCG/not CG: Mod Low poo currently has a water soluble cone

Hair ingredient likes:
Hair ingredient dislikes: Not really sure about these yet. PT made my hair nice and soft though

Hard/Soft Water: normal, with a high iron content

HG/Go-to Products: currently using:
lowpoo: organix tea tree mint
Co: vo5 kiwi
RO: tress. naturals
LI: tress naturals or catwalk oatmeal honey.
Styling products: trying to figure it out.

Average climate/dew points: high except for winter, where it gets a lot lower. (dew point today 68 )

Thinking about a new low poo though. get rid of that cone and plus whenever I low poo i rinse my hair and my hands will make and audible squeak when i slide over my hair to ring out water.

My hair is way frizzier sine going CG. my wave pattern is certainly getting stronger, but the top layer of my hair looks sad.

Can someone please help.

started CG on 6/25/12.
  • 2c with a strait underneath
  • normal elasticity on top, none on the underneath
  • Fine side of Normal
  • Thick hair
  • Poriosity is a mystery. I think its all over the place.
Hair Biography

Curl Pattern: 2c/3a
Texture: on the fine side of medium (about 60 microns)
Porosity: medium, high if I don't use conditioner for a day
Density: medium, 3.25"
Elasticity: normal and good
Characteristics: APL, layered, dark brown hair with silver. I frizz easily. My hair doesn't have much spring for the amount of curl it has. My hair is stubborn and hard to encourage to clump. Resistant to no heat curl techniques and sun in lightening. (have never tried stronger products) Can absorb a moderate amount of conditioner.

CG/ModCG/not CG: CG

Hair ingredient likes: oil
Hair ingredient dislikes: mayonnaise, baking soda (weak solutions used occasionally are ok). Soaps and shampoo bars. Protein as leave in or dt. (Gelatin pt makes my hair act over conditioned (limp, soft, frizzy)). Hard hold gels that form a cast.

Hard/Soft Water: soft (west coast)

HG/Go-to Products: currently Everyday Shea bubble bath and conditioner. Coconut oil as a dt or pre poo. Olive oil as a gloss or sealer.

Average climate/dew points: moderate dews year round (40-50 in winter, 50-60 in summer)

Fall/Winter combos:
Spring/Summer combos:
Will probably be the same since I live in a very moderate climate, but I haven't decided yet.

Favorite styling techniques and why: Applying oils to dry hair (i get immediate smoothing and easy to tell when I've had enough). Plopping! (enhances root curl nicely) Satin pillowcase (reduces frizz and tangles). Scalp massage and sebum mobilization when hair is upside down and dry just before washing (cleans scalp and increases hair growth).
Techniques that didn't work and why: pineappling (gives me a headache), skip curls and finger curls (nothing happens), washing and styling upside down (promotes tangles), SOTC (encourages frizz)

Hair Twins: plunkybug, jsuzkelley maybe, even though she lives in a different climate. zeynokiz maybe.

Hair ingredient dislikes: Still experimenting.

Hair Biography

Curl Pattern: 2c
Texture: coarse
Porosity: low
Density: medium
Elasticity: normal
Characteristics: flat top/no root curl, easily weighed down

CG/ModCG/not CG: fairly new to CG - about 2 months. So far I am a fan.

Hair ingredient likes: Moroccanoil & shea butter.
Hair ingredient dislikes: Alcohol & sulfates.

Hard/Soft Water: Hard

HG/Go-to Products: Jessie Curl Cleansing Cream & Too Shea!Moisturizing Conditioner, Morrocanoil Curl Control Mousse

Average climate/dew points: Extremely dry! I live in AZ.

Fall/Winter combos:
Spring/Summer combos:

Favorite styling techniques and why: Scrunching, diffusing & clipping for root lift.
Techniques that didnít work and why: Saturating with too much product. It always weighs down my curls.
Finally starting to figure this out... maybe...

Curl Pattern: 2b/3a
Texture: medium-fine
Porosity: low (I think...)
Density: med-thick, especially at the crown and just below it on the back of my head
Elasticity: normal (??)
Characteristics: not terribly flat but more root curl if diffused, easy easy easy to style - holds without product when heat-styled or just if pinned up for more than 5 minutes, permanent color for the last 6-7 years (premature grey :-P)

CG/ModCG/not CG: modified CG (flaky scalp cannot handle no-poo)

Hair ingredient likes: moisture moisture moisture, keratin, aloe, oils as long as rinsed out (like with a DT) or applied to dry hair only
Hair ingredient dislikes: glycerin, polyquats, wheat/oat protein, soy protein, ??silk protein

Hard/Soft Water: soft

HG/Go-to Products: Giovanni Tea Tree poo, Suave naturals conditioners (except coconut), KCKT and KCCC (new loves), GVP K-pak for protein

Average climate/dew points: as low as 20s in the winter and 70s in the summer, average probably 40-50

Fall/Winter combos: still working...
Spring/Summer combos: still working...

Favorite styling techniques and why: air drying, scrunching with just hands or a t-shirt, smasters as long as I SOTC with a few drops of oil (otherwise diffusion = frizz, even pixicurls style), plopping? (need a different towel I think)
Techniques that didnít work and why: pineappleing (stylable hair = ponytail lines), overaggressive diffusing (frizz frizz frizz), any kind of clipping (it all makes lines in my hair)

Hair Twins: ?? (would love to find one!)
Mod CG since 5/10, 2b/3a, med width/density, low/med porosity, greying since 18, color over grey since 21

Hair hates: non-keratin protein, glycerin, sorbitol, agave, sulfates, polyquats, co-washing (flaky scalp), maybe aloe?
Hair loves: fewer/more natural ingredients, moisture

Scalp wash: Selsun Blue naturals or reg when desperate
Low poo: Giovanni TTTT
RO: SN - Strawberry, ES
LI: SNES
Style: HETT mousse, FSG if I make it, ??
DT: GVPCB
PT: GVPKP
Looking for my hair twin!

I've been trying CG for quite a while now, and I feel like I still haven't gotten it quite right.

Curl pattern: 2a/b? I seem to have three different textures: stronger waves (even some ringlets) underneath, mostly straight roots with an odd bend in the very front, waves on the top layers, weak waves in the back. Even when I get a nice pattern going, my hair still looks so...flyaway-y! I think my avatar is a good indicator of that.
Texture: Fine.
Porosity: Medium-high? It mostly floats in the sink/float test, but is definitely bumpy in the strand texture test.
Density: Medium-high? I can't see scalp except for my part, but my ponytail is weaksauce. I haven't measured, but the circumference is maybe that of a quarter?
Elasticity: Low? When I do a strand test, it sometimes retains its shape, and sometimes it recoils into some crazy kinky-curly business!

CG/modCG/not CG: modCG. My current conditioner has bis-aminopropyl dimethicone, so when it runs out, I'm going to find something new.

Hard/soft water: No clue. I think Chicago has hard-ish water?

Average climate/dew points: Chicago. Morning relative humidity in the 80s, dew point 30s (spring), 60s (summer), 40s (fall), 10s (winter).

HG/Go-to Products: Unsure. Deva Ultra Defining Gel has been nice so far, but it's still not HG-worthy.

Fall/Winter combos: Unsure
Spring/Summer combos: Unsure

Favorite styling techniques and why: Unsure
Techniques that didn’t work and why: Raking takes out any wave. Haven't tried ploppin/pineappling/etc. because my hair's on the shorter side.
Hair Twins: Still looking!

Hair characteristics: I can't seem to get any good clumping going on the upper layers. My waves disappear really easily: a loose ponytail, or even a steady wind, can make my hair lifeless.

My hair has a great pattern when I get out of the shower and apply product, but seems to straighten out in the drying process. I typically air-dry, because even using a diffuser creates a lot of surface frizz. Honestly, I feel like my hair can frizz or get flyaways right out of the shower. It can take *hours* to dry completely. I also did ombrť on the ends of my hair a few months ago, so they're still rather dry and unhappy. I would never call my hair shiny, not even on a good day.

My avatar is my hair after using the Deva line with the newer ultra defining gel. It's the best second-day hair I've had in a long time, so maybe Deva is right for me. I suppose my questions are: 1) Protein or moisture? Lighter products, or heavy? 2) Is there a way to even out the texture? 3) What types of products should I be looking for: butter, gel, mousse? I clearly need help with definition, hold, and shine.

Sorry for the short essay, but after a few years of experimenting and still not seeing the results of so many people on this site, I'm really at a loss!
Keeping it simple so far...
Shampoo/Condish: Deva Care No-Poo, Wella Brilliance Conditioner for Colored Hair
Currently trying: Deva Ultra Defining Gel

Curl Pattern: 2a, with potential for 2b when I get it right
Texture: medium
Porosity: medium
Density: medium
Elasticity: normal

Characteristics: prone to tangling, not totally flat top but not super voluminous either, some volume around the face, no root curl except a little around the face, easily frizzes, straightens easily at first but waves always sneak back in, does not hold curls made from heat very long,

CG/ModCG/not CG: No-poo does not work for me, maybe if I had soft water but I donít. I can only get away with doing BS/ACV once a month or so. Currently lo-poo using CVS Baby Wash (main surfactant is Decyl glucoside). As far as conditionerÖ I am trying to use up what I have before I buy more. So Iím not cone-free YET but I plan to. Currently have Pantene Smooth Vitality and Pantene Aqua Light.

Hair ingredient likes: moisture, coconut oil as pre-wash treatment, other than than not sure yet
Hair ingredient dislikes: donít really know yet

Hard/Soft Water: hard

HG/Go-to Products: I used to LOVE Garnier Fructis curl cream (but that was before I found this site, and before they discontinued it) so I donít currently have an HG yet; planning to make some FSG soon, and would really like to find a cheap mousse that will work for me as I prefer some fluffiness over the wet/stringy look I usually get with gel and/or sea salt spray

Average climate/dew points: in Chicago soÖ itís all over the place!

Fall/Winter combos: totally new, donít have this down yet
Spring/Summer combos: see above lol

Favorite styling techniques and why: scrunching with mousse (havenít tried plopping or anything else yet for that matter)
Techniques that didnít work and why: raking kills my wave pattern

Hair Twins: STILL LOOKING!
Curl pattern: 3a with some 3b and 2c to make it interesting
Texture: baby fine
Porosity: low to medium
Density: thin side of normal
Elasticity: good
Characteristics: currently just past shoulder length (when dry) and reaches just past my shoulder blades (when wet). Light brown with red Demi-permanent color, gradually getting control of my frizz. My curl pattern is much stronger and tighter since going sulfate free.
Mod CG: still use some products with a-cone....lo poo usually 2-3x week.

Hair likes: Moisture! Coconut, shea, and more natural products. Keratin protein only regularly, but some protein is ok if it is at the bottom of ingredient list.
Hair dislikes: products with heavy proteins, ANYTHING wheat-based; glycerin.

Water: normal
Climate: Seattle marine climate, rainy and cool with moderate dews year-round.

likes: Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat(HG), Beautiful Textures moisturizing poo, SM MR poo, DB Pumpkin cond (HG), JC Too Shea (HG), One & Only Argan Oil hydrating Masque, Camille Rose Moisture Milk, JCCC, MGA Sculpting gel, Curls Goddess gel, Uncle Funky' s daughter Curly Magic

Techniques I like: scrunching in product upside down, applying stylers to soaking wet hair and then scrunching out some of the moisture with flour sack towel.
Didn't like: satin pillowcase (get too hot at night), finger shaping my curls (just doesn't seem to help at all), diffusing (too much frizz)

Possible hair twins: jsuzkelley (different climate), Cuban curl-e (different curl pattern but many of the same issues with products), dresdendoll
3a, baby fine i/ii, low to normal porosity, protein sensitive
Mod CG since 5/12, from rainy Western WA
dislikes: glycerin, wheat protein
Likes: moisture, Mag Sulfate
Poo: Elucence Moisture Acidifying Shampoo
Cond: CJCR, VO5 Clarifying Conditioner
LI: JC WDT, CJ CR
Style: Loma Curvature Curvy Cream, True Polaris Protein Free Truly curly styling gel (Etsy), Sweet Curls flax seed defining gel (Etsy)

I broke down and got a hair analysis, so I can finally join in the fun and find some hair twins

Hair Biography

Curl Pattern: Mix of 2b and 2c
Texture: Medium
Porosity: Medium
Density: Thick
Elasticity: Normal
Characteristics: Canopy is much less wavy than underneath.

CG/ModCG/not CG: Technically ModCG--I'm personally avoiding 'cones and sulfates, but my stylist still uses them on me. I'm on a mission to convert her.

Hair ingredient likes: A little keratin; moisture...but I'm still experimenting.
Hair ingredient dislikes: Silk protein--it kills my waves!

Hard/Soft Water: Soft

HG/Go-to Products: FSG is my new favorite thing EVER. Love GVPCB for my RO. I'm still experimenting with various things, though.

Average climate/dew points: Dry. Dews usually in the 20s or 30s, but they can range from the teens to the upper 40s.

Fall/Winter combos: We get more moisture in the winter, so I predict a little more humectant use in my future.
Spring/Summer combos: Avoid glycerin like the plague!

Favorite styling techniques and why: Supersoaker and the Denman brush--such fabulous wurls and clumps! Diffusing hasn't gone too horribly, but I don't tend to need body.
Techniques that didnít work and why: Plopping is okay, but often makes some of the waves near my face all wonky.

Hair Twins: Not sure yet!
2b/2c--Dry climate
Medium texture/Normal Elasticity/Normal Porosity
High density

Current Routine:
Cleanser/Co-wash: VO5/AIA Coconut Co-wash
RO: GVPCB
LI: Yes to Carrots Pampering Conditioner

Super Soaker
Styler: Homemade FSG with a small bit of coconut oil and LALSG
DT/PT: CJCR, GVP Hair Reconstructor or Ion Reconstructor

Curl Pattern: 2b
Texture: fine
Porosity: not sure I think low/medium (although my hair frizzes easily)
Density: thin/medium
Elasticity: low
Characteristics: frizzes easily, never holds curls by curling iron, ranges from 2a (when brushed/combed out dry) 2b (in the climate where i live, [new england] this is the normal) to 3a (in very humid climates, for instance, florida, which made my hair curl like crazy)
CG/ModCG/not CG: don't have silicone free stuff (except one but its no slip) so not CG
Hair ingredient likes: whatever is in evercreme sulfate-free moisture system deep nourishing masque
Hair ingredient dislikes: not quite sure

Hard/Soft Water: I have only ever used hard, so I have no clue which is better

HG/Go-to Products: evercreme sulfate-free moisture system deep nourishing masque (it makes my hair slightly less dry)

Average climate/dew points: humid and mild temperatures (new england)

Fall/Winter combos: I am new, I don't know combos.
Spring/Summer combos: same as above

Favorite styling techniques and why:allowing hair to become damp before sleeping, then lightly combing in morning (my hair went a little less poof)
Techniques that didnít work and why: going to sleep with sopping wet hair (straight out of shower) then combing out hair (very quickly and roughly)
my hair went poof
Curl Pattern: 2a-2c, 1c back underlayer
Texture: very fine
Porosity: medium
Density: medium
Elasticity: low
Characteristics: Inconsistent wave pattern. Halo frizz. More (big) curls show up the longer my hair gets. Very, very soft with no gel, to the point that I really don't want to use gel at all. Will lose curl through the day, no matter the product (so far).

CG/ModCG/not CG: Not CG, with the aim to have healthier hair in general from less heat and no sulfates.

Hair ingredient likes: It does fairly well with most things, but I don't always like them. I like to keep my hair softer, and crunch does not always scrunch out. I don't try as hard to make it super-curly, because the straight parts just stick out, and I question that methodology a little bit because I think it stems from the 3s and 4s instead of being tailored to the 2s.

Hard/Soft Water: Soft, with a chlorine shower filter

HG/Go-to Products: Hair One Olive Oil, Pantene mousse, KCCC if I want to go super curly and air dry, One 'n Only Argan Low Poo, currently trying new stuff

Average climate/dew points: Georgia - humid and hot in summer, damp in winter. Terrible for curly hair! I think that's why I've resorted to cones.

Fall/Winter combos: I can't spend a lot on hair stuff so I try things slowly, but I've been fairly successful with most things I've tried for at least a few hours, then it tends to fall. Struggling with winter frizz right now.
Spring/Summer combos: same as above

Favorite styling techniques and why: Letting air dry then diffusing the last bit. Supersoaker, scrunching, or diffusing work for curls.

Techniques that didn’t work and why: Pineappling and plopping. If I go overnight, the curl is wonky to one side, and I think my hair is too short to make plopping work correctly. It does better if I can control it as it dries.
Averages out at 2b, ranges from 1c to 3a, very fine
Mane 'n Tail co-wash + leave-in

Curl Pattern: 2b/maybe c?
Texture: medium
Porosity: low
Density: medium
Elasticity: extremely high
Characteristics: no root curl, easily weighed down, takes to styling very easily

CG/ModCG/not CG: very new to CG and not 100% sure what the "rules" are but I think I am CG currently

Hair ingredient likes: FSG, sure on any more specifics yet
Hair ingredient dislikes: Too many cones

Hard/Soft Water: I think it's hard...

HG/Go-to Products: Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie

Average climate/dew points: Seasonal ranging from mid-20s to mid-60s with relative mid-day humidity averaging around 55%

Fall/Winter combos: still learning, right now cowash with Suave Naturals (not coconut) and leave is with Shea Moisture Smoothie
Spring/Summer combos: nothing yet

Favorite styling techniques and why: Ringing out (!!), scrunch and squeeze about 6 times each section. Clipping roots.
Techniques that didn’t work and why: Plopping and scrunch drying, my clumps fall apart without a ton of moisture and it becomes a stringy mess, BUT I also have to be very careful about quantity of products because the low-po makes it that much harder to dry and my curls will fall from the weight of the water if I'm not careful.

Hello.
My hair type is 2a. I'm 21 and I'm from India. As a child I had stick straight, thick black hair. Much if that is gone now
At 16 I started using hair products from Dove and man, did my hair love it. After two years, all the silicones from that product made my hair so dry and frizzy. I actually bought myself a flat iron thinking that it will fix my awkwardly straight hair. I knew flat iron damages hair so I looked up websites where I could find how to protect hair. Thats when I came across this website and realized what I was doing wrong.
I immediately changed my routine and products.. Sadly, silicone free products are not available here,so I use stuff with cones listed at the bottom of the ingredients list (buying body products online is not an option for me because my mom doesn't trust online sites and freaks out everytime I try to do so ) .
So, the health of my hair improved so much after this. The frizz is gone, I discovered that my real hair is 2a and I can't thank this website and the wonderful ladies enough for saving my hair.

I use aloe vera to reduce excess shedding and castor oil on my scalp in attempt to retrieve at least a little bit of the thickness I had as a child.

I currently use Herbal Essences HH, Garnier, Enliven conditioners for rinse outs and co wash.
I use coconut and olive oil and honey as deep treatments.
I'm still looking for a good styling product.
I still use sulfates to clean but I usually dilute it and I shampoo once in two weeks. Vinegar works well on cleaning my hair too.

Characteristics:
Left side is lazier it is 2c with a few 2b pieces where as the back and right side are 2c/3a. My hair frizzes up very easily. My hair is also easily styled, I can straighten it and it will last until I wet it and my hair curls with a curling iron very easily.

CG/ModCG/not CG:

Hair ingredient likes:

Hair ingredient dislikes:
I am thinking my hair doesn't like protein, I had this sulfate free shampoo that had egg white protein in it and it made my hair feel like straw.

HG/Go-to Products:
La Bella Lots of Curls gel, Sauve Naturals conditioner, Tresemme Naturals Conditioner. These are the only ones I have liked so far.

Spring/Summer combos: Still working on it

Favorite styling techniques and why: I just like to rake my product in then scrunch it, so if that is a certain styling technique then I like that one.

Techniques that didnít work and why: Rake and shake, it made my hair limp and killed my curls. Plopping it made my hair flat on top and gave me crazy curls.

HG/Go-to Products: Magick Botanicals Conditioner, Gel, Conditioner for Thinning Hair, Hairspray (its silicone free!), Shampoo for thining hair, Lily of the Desert Aloe Vera Gelly, Apricot Seed Oil, IAGirl's Gelatin-based protein treatment. Before I figured out the connection between fragrance and my allergy issues, I liked KCCC and KCNT, but it did weigh my hair down and took forever to dry. Henna with Amla for color.

Average climate/dew points:Dry mountain climate (CO)

Fall/Winter combos: Same Products, use more oil, less protein, less shampooing (about every 7-10 days)

Spring/Summer combos: Same Products, use less oil, more protein, a little more shampooing (5-7 days)

Favorite styling techniques and why: Denman brushing to work conditioner through in the shower.Scunching throughout the process, right after shower to get the water out, with a towel to dry, to put my gel in, and with a towel one last time after the gel is in; for some reason that last scrunch is where the magic happens and the curls tighten. I also like plopping but only for a short time (10-15). I do it right after I put in my gel. Shaking the roots up after the hair is fully dry, give me volume, breaks up crunch and give a more natural look.

Techniques that didnít work and why:
Using the Denman after my gel was in pulled out my curl. Shake and rake after applying gel for the same reason. Plopping for a long time makes my curl pattern inconsistent. Putting hair directly in the bowl diffuser when drying causes frizz and an inconsistent pattern

Hair Twins: None that I know of.
Have several allergies and sensitivities.
Current products
Low Poo/Cowash: Rio Grande Herb Co Negrita and Amole Deep Treatment Concentrate, Magick Botanicals (MB) Shampoo (diluted)
Rinse out/Leave in: MB with apricot kernel and jojoba oils added
Protein Treatment: MB Conditioner for Thinning Hair, IAgirl's protien treatment
Style: MB Gel mixed with LOTD Aloe Vera Gelly

2b-c, need lots of moisture, likes protein in moderation.
Curl Pattern: 2b/c
Texture: coarse
Porosity: low
Density: med-thick
Elasticity: normal
Characteristics: top is wavy/curly, underneath has spiral curls
CG/ModCG/not CG: modCG - water soluble cones

Hair ingredient likes: honey, baking soda and ACV rinse
Hair ingredient dislikes: products high in protein
Hard/Soft Water: hard water

HG/Go-to Products: only 2 month modCG but so far I like
Alba Botanicals So Smooth Gardenia condish
L'Oreal Sulfate Free poo and condish
John Frieda curl defining gel
KCCC - just tried it yesterday and love it
Average climate/dew points: very dry, high desert climate with low dew points
Fall/Winter combos: don't know yet
Spring/Summer combos: don't know yet

Favorite styling techniques and why: scrunch in gel and airdry with clips or blow dry with directional tip while holding the hair still to prevent frizz
Techniques that didnít work and why: plopping and diffusing each create terrible frizz for me. I can plop for maybe 5-10 minutes at most but I only do that if I need more curl on top.
Curl Pattern: 2a/2b... sometimes tight spirals... it's all over the place
Texture: medium-fine
Porosity: medium-high
Density: medium
Elasticity: normal
Characteristics: weak curl pattern (curls easily, but loses curl easily), prone to canopy frizz (getting better w/ CG), sometimes 2a/2b/2c all at once= rat's nest, needs some weight but not too much, since I've been CG I'm struggling w/ getting volume and not touching it while drying

CG/ModCG/not CG: GC !

Hair ingredient likes: coconut oil, olive oil, some protein (soybean), glycerine gives me nice curls but also frizz
Hair ingredient dislikes: argan oil is too light, a lot of low-poos I'm finding too harsh

Hard/Soft Water: soft

HG/Go-to Products: I'm just starting out. So Sukin Nourishing Condish (cowash), Renew Everyday Condish, Nature's Gate Herbal condish, Chamomile Condish, trying Giovanni DLI

Average climate/dew points: humid! Tropical! High dews!

Fall/Winter combos:
Spring/Summer combos:

Favorite styling techniques and why: Ice queen, I think I like plopping
Techniques that didnít work and why: clipping... it left weird marks in my hair
