Oh, yeah, I didn't mean that my hair won't look messy in some ways. I'm not expecting it to be uniform like curly hair. Just more that it's not clumped very well... and the stringy waves are all over the place. The first 10 days of CG my hair seemed to always clump in the same way and I got really used to that, so much that my hair doesn't seem right now. Maybe that was just luck, though and I can't expect that to always happen. I've also seen like 50% of my wave fall out within 3 or 4 hours of SOTC these past 2 days. It's just throwing me off. I have to calm down about it though, I know. Maybe I just got super lucky at first and now I have to realise it's not always going to be a good hair day for me!Well Euterpe, I'm not sure the messiness will go away. I think that goes with the territory of being a wavy. There are some wavies who hair looks orderly (justduit comes to mind), but most of us have some unruly combination and I think we will be forever searching for a way to make it all fit.
However, what I have found to be true, is that over time, and with certain product combos, your curl pattern will tighten up just a bit. Just like 2 months ago my bottom layer was just almost straight, now it actually waves up on a regular basis, and with some product combos I actually see curls and not just limp waves. I really don't think that its something that happens overnight, or happens to everyone, but over time you'll see some improvement!
Oh, and you can't force your hair to be wavy when it isn't! completely straight hair does not have any bends. I totally understand your thought process though, because when I first started noticing my waves I thought it was left over perm (after a year? and my hair was short so I maybe had at most 3 inches of perm left on the ends. Then I thought that my hair only curled because it was dry and damaged. Finally, when telling my friend with straight hair the same story, she told me I was nutto and straight hair never curls/waves like mine did (and yours is much wavier curlier than mine) just because you scrunch it with gel. My friend showed me what her hair did -- and its nothing hahaha. It doesn't curl on the ends or anything, its just a stringy mess. There are no clumps, because there are no curls to stick together.
I have the same almost straight bottom layer as you and I'm definitely seeing some wave to it now, too.
I know i'm being a pain in the butt. As I said in my first post on these boards, the past 3 years i've spent thinking I just had unruly straight hair, so I'd just tie it back and forget about it every day. Now that I know I actually have wavy hair, i'm going, admittedly, a little too nuts over it all, lol.
And thank you so much, for that last paragraph. I know I was being ridiculous worrying about it... but knowing what your friend said and showed you... that helps so so much.
Thank you for the advice/information
