Default Cowash conditioner for oily hair

I'm new, really trying to read as much as I can but just had a few questions.

I usually low poo, have for years. I have really oily hair, but I'm trying to cowash, at least 85% of the week now.

So cowashing means you wash with conditioner everyday, or every other day and water wash sometimes?

I bought Mop Tops daily conditioner for volume....can I use that to cowash until I get some Suave? You guys seem to like Suave Naturals a lot. I think I'll try that to cowash at least four days a week with, and lowpoo the other days until I can get away with less and less lowpoo. I tried with VO5 moisture milks before and I was just way too greasy!

I'm guessing shampoo bars count as lowpoo? Do I HAVE to use ACV after I use one.

Thanks for any help!

Cowashing just means washing with conditioner instead of shampoo. Whether that is low poo or full SLS poo or whateva' How often you do it is up to you.

I have/had oily hair..when I stopped using sulfates I found out it's not as oily as I thought. I use both low poo and shampoo bars..although I prefer the low poo's. I think you have to do an ACV after it all the time. Someone else may know more.

Honestly Suave and V05 did not do it for my oily hair. If I cowash now I use something with a form of tea tree or something marketed as a "cleansing" conditioner that may actually have some cleansing surfactant in it (vs just emollients or what not in regular condish). Goober knows more about this so hopefully she'll respond

So I used Giovanni Tea Tree Condish or Trade Joe's Tea Tree condish. I've also used Hairveda's Amala Cream Rinse (love) and Komaza Almond Milk Cleansing conditioner (love but discontinued). I'm currently searching for another one.

Brenditas bodyworks has one but I haven't tried it yet..I have so much stuff now I just can't justify it unless I only get a few things (maybe I'll do that to try this)

Hope this helps!

Thanks Alexjoujou. My failure with cowashing was probably the conditioner I used. I'll try the Gteatree.

I really want to try the Hairveda's Amala Cream Rinse, but when I googled it I see a lot of girls with really curly hair use it....but it was ok on your hair?

I love the thought of the shampoo bars but am freaked out about putting acv in my hair, I don't want it to smell.

Hey Pharaoh!

If I were you I'd try out the GTTT, that's next on my list. I used the GTTT shampoo and it worked great. My scalp and hair were pretty oily. I moved to low-poo pretty quickly cause with co-washing I got scalp acne. I have had luck with the Devacurl No-poo and Wen though. Or I can alternate co-wash and low-poo without it being too much of a problem.

I'm intrigued by the cream rinse, I know alex uses it, but when I read the ingred, I don't know enough about the cationic surfactants to recognize all of them. Otherwise the cream rinse looks like a conditioner. So I'm guessing its perfect for those who are really dry or who's hair needs that extra boost.

I condition after my ACV, so I never smell it during the day.

I just wanted to share my experience, since I have/had pretty much oily EVERYTHING on my body at least I thought I did...I'm thinking I'm not as oily as I previously thought, OR I have just learned what works for me in terms of controlling it...

Originally, I went mod-CG (used a low-poo) because I thought there was no WAY I'd ever be able to just co-wash...however, I have now been 'poo free for a little over a month, and my scalp has never felt better! I"m still learning and experimenting, but so far what I have found works best for *me* is Suave Daily Clarifying conditioner...here is an ingredient list:

Water (Aqua), Cetyl Alcohol; Cetrimonium Chloride; Potassium Chloride;Distearyldimonium Chloride; Fragrance (Parfum); Disodium EDTA; DMDM Hydantoin; PVP; Methylchloroisothiazolinone; Methylisothiazolinone.

It is 100% oil free and does have some mild cleansing agents (I believe?), which I'm thinking is what my hair likes...I've used the GTTTT and TJTTT conditioners, and while I like the smell/tingle-yness, so far it seems to cause me more frizz at my roots than I care for...and they both have a number of oils...

In general, I have been co-washing probably 5 out of 7 days each week...i'm still working on 2nd day hair But I know a lot of ladies only co-wash every other day, even just once a week...I just go by how my hair looks/feels...

and I am by no means an expert, but I do believe it is fairly necessary to do an ACV rinse after a 'poo bar because of the pH?? I believe the poo bars are more alkaline and "rough up" the hair shaft, leaving the cuticle open...the ACV rinse then closes up the cuticle...someone can correct me if I'm wrong

Hey Goobernut, here is a link for you. It lists cationic surfactants among other common hair care ingredients.

Cool

You guys are such a wealth of knowledge! I really think that I can wean into nopoo if I have the right conditioner and take my time.

I'm going to get the Suave Daily Clarifying conditioner because of it being oil free. I'm like you buckeye....oily.

Funny thing is that you adjust. I only wash my face at night, taking off makeup and washing good. In the morning I just rinse. My skin is WAY less oily than before. I think it goes on the same premise of CG...the more you strip, the more your body produces.

I'm going to start lowpoo/cg like every third day and see how it works then use shampoo less and less.

Do you guys wash after you do a DT? I did a protein treatment last night and just Cowashed with aveda rosemary mint this morning and my hair looks YUCK!

Hey Putaheya! I just pulled out my live-free live curly e-book and found it. Stearalkonium Chloride is a cationic surfactant, so its got one in the Amala cream rinse. Its also a decent detangler too lol.

pharaoh I always low-poo after I DT, esp if its a coconut oil DT. I get too oily.

Did you do a deep condition after the protein treatment? If not, you definitely need to.

For example: Last night I did a protein treatment for 15 minutes , then I deep conditioned for 15 minutes, then put a LI in and let it air dry and went to bed. This morning I just got it wet in the shower and styled as normal (LI, curl enhancer, gel, air dry).

No I didn't DT. Can I do it tonight? I will start doing it directly after I protein. How many times a week do you use protein treatments/DT?

I think you should do a DT tonight - your hair probably needs the moisture (PT's tend to be drying) and that's why it looks yucky. I did a PT (Nexxus Emergencee) & DT (GVP CB) last week, but only for 5 minutes each. This week I did them both for 15 minutes. Some people only do them once a month though. I think it also has to do with how many products you use with protein in them. I really only use one right now (SN Tropical Coconut) so I might need a PT more often then if I were using a couple different things with protein in them (which I plan to start doing).

Once you figure out how your hair reacts to PT's you should be able to notice when you need one.

Thanks Dark Waves. That makes sense. I'm going to start pt/dt once a week and see how my hair response. Then I'll adjust!

Red face Update

I've been off trying a bunch of products! I need to hold back so I can make the distinction of what works and what doesn't.

What I've just found that DOES work for me is Suave Daily Clarifying conditioner (thanks Buckeye!!!!!) I used it today and didn't put on any other product just to see what it did. I swear my hair is softer and has more body and feels "cleaner" than when I was lowpooing with Christophe shampoo. I just love it.

Can I expect it to maybe get a little more wave the longer I DONT use shampoo? I'd love more, more, more....I'm barely a 2a...a strong wind will blow it all out.

Still working with product. I'm trying magnesium oil/water and a spritz and I've used DOC but one of those is weighing me down...so I've got to move forward a little at a time!

Try the V05 conditioners. Choose one that says "clarifying" like the lime verbana or the tea therapy vanilla mint (the one I'm using). They even foam a little bit, so it should get your hair thoroughly cleaned. Also, try something that contains tea tree oil. Tea tree is known for its oil-absorbing and balancing properties. HTH!

Thanks Noracurl. I would have never thought that conditioners would be any different....clarifying/volume/shine...not sure why I just thought they would be all the same.

I will experiment with VO5 as well. I'm so excited to be able to cowash. My hair honestly looks exactly the same when I cowash with one of the clarifying conditioners as it does when I lowpoo....so why lowpoo!
