Water mist ==> surface frizz

After 6 months of CG (tomorrow- yay!), I have seen m hair under all kinds of product combinations and dewpoint/humidity conditions. It doesn't matter if I'm on first day hair totally soaked in leave-in after doing a moisturizing DT. My hair has zero frizz when wet in the shower or applying product. It dries frizz-free and stays pretty nice all day with the right products/techniques. But if I spray water or any kind of spray containing water on totally dry hair (example- to refresh 2nd day hair) or go out in mist/fog/rain then I get TONS of canopy/surface frizz that will not smooth down again unless I totally soak my head and start over. I have tried conditioners, gels, oils, pomades and nothing works. What gives? Why do I get super water frizz some times and not others?

I'm really looking forward to some replies on this as well! I have very little frizz first day as well. I pineapple at night and have great results next day for 2nd & sometimes 3rd day hair EXCEPT the top of my head, the curls get kinda mushed from the pineapple scrunchie. If I use even just a tiny bit of misted water, I get terrible frizz on top but my curls underneath stay fine. I have super fine hair and am worried about products that might weigh it down.

I'm hoping AlexJouJou can make some product suggestions as well. I've really been studying her reviews to find something that might work for me.

Loving my curlier hair!
Why not leave out the water and go straight to a little bit of oil, or aloe vera, or leave in, or conditioner? Or spray much less than you do now and then put a little bit of oil, or aloe vera, or leave-in or conditioner into it.

Or make a spray (put some conditioner into a bottle (pick quite a runny one), add some water and some aloe vera to it. Mix well, then spray.

This is a really good video on reviving and maintaining curls, I think:

Straight oils and conditioner are too heavy. Watered-down anything still has, well, water. I have a few spray bottles that I use to experiment with different refreshing spray mixes. Also, rain, snow, fog, etc. also give the same problem.

I can't spritz without getting frizz. So I don't - instead I take a curl cream or condish - dilute with water in my hands by rubbing them together and smooth lightly on the canopy. I don't touch it again until its dry and has soaked in.

I'm always going to have *some* frizz on 2nd day hair but much less with smoothing than spritzing.

This is more of a guess then a suggestion from actual experience.
Have you tried jojoba oil? It technically a wax and not an oil. If your frizz is caused by humidity, it might work to seal with it.
Sorry I can't help more.

What works for me in this instance is to spray a little water on the hair and follow with a tiny bit of gel and conditioner mixed in the palms then smoothed and scrunched into the hair. It works for me in the morning for second, sometimes third day hair, and if we're going out in the evening and I've mussed my hair by changing clothes.Water alone will just frizz. Sometimes I use gel only, but it results in more crunch.
Have you tried wetting your hands and then scrunching your hair with the wet hands? That works better for my hair...less frizz, and you can add a styler or gel and emulsify if you want.

I found that I can't use water either, I had to search through quite a few hair butters -- they are usually mixed with several different ingredients. I didn' thave any luck with beeswax, some girls love it.

I'll take just barely a half a fingernail scrape (and I mean tiny) of the Shescentit Gillian Hair butter and scrunch it in, and then use anything left to smooth down the canopy. Its the best 2nd day refresher I've found.

I also realize that oil mixed with water might still have water in it, but it might also give you different results. If you have a problem with the oil being too heavy, finding a way to still get it on your hair, but putting on less might be the key.

I know that FrizzBgone uses Darcy's peach hydrating milk in this way -- as a second day frizz killer. Then after letting that soak in, she uses Oyin's whipped pudding to scrunch in. Every other refersher method gives her frizz.

I haven't been able to spray with water without getting frizz the entire time I've been on these boards and we're getting close to 4 years now -- until about 2 weeks ago. I think it's because I have FINALLY gotten the protein/moisture balance right for my hair. Now I can spray with water but what I have found works for me is right after spraying I take my hands and smooth the water down the hair shaft before scrunching. Has been working great - no frizz!

If I'm Going To Have A Bad Hair Day, It Might As Well Be In Aruba!

If I spray anything and scrunch it equals ponytail and headband. I have found that I can take some sort of conditioner, butter, etc. (just a little bit, you can always add more!) and rub it between my hands to get it really supple and warm and then smooth it over my hair from top to bottom. Sometimes I'll very lightly "flat iron" sections between flattened palms to get my hair thoroughly coated. Then I can usually lightly scrunch to spring the waves/curl back up.

I don't get second day hair. It doesn't exist for me. But, this does tend to work when I need to refreshen my hair at work for any reason. It might not be as curly as it was earlier but it will smooth it out nicely.
Thanks for all the suggestions! I will definitely be trying variations on

1. Rub product between hands, possibly diluted
2. smooth on hair, especially canopy
3. scrunch to re-form curls if needed

Now I have to figure out how long it takes to dry to see if I have time to run into the bathroom and re-smooth after being out in the rain before I have to go to a meeting...

Well...my brain is almost dead now, so please bear with me.

I've found that if I've been "encouraging" my waves the first day, it equals frizz on the second day. I stopped scrunching tooooo much, lessened my plopping time and stopped "curl enhancing" products, and all of a sudden I could get FOURTH day hair. I think too much encouraging is like forcing the waves/curls into looking like something they aren't and when they get wet again, some of them try to be their natural selves, thus causing frizz. I can wet my hands with water and smooth and lightly scrunch my natural waves to refresh them on second, third or even sometimes fourth day(yea I don't have an oily scalp). If I've been encouraging the waves into being tighter, or scrunch it to create the 3a curls it makes when it's shorter, I cannot get second day hair at all, and I've tried every known refreshing method.

The gist: if you've been scrunching too much, using enhancing products or just doing something to make your hair curlier/wavier, you can try going easy on those.

Of course, these may or may not apply to you and your hair at all, every head of curls is different
