Did I miss something?

Did you guys notice that products sold in CurlMart are being linked in our posts?

Are YOU guys doing that? Is that like a new trendy thing? Some of the links go back to product pics that are no longer valid. I haven't noticed it in my OWN posts, but it seems random.

I went back and looked at the Hair Bio thread, and I swear some of the products in people's posts that weren't linked before are now linked.

Am I crazy?

Alexjoujou 01-22-2010 07:29 AM

Nope. Not crazy.

There was a general post somewhere (forget where..readers product reviews or general maybe??) that said they were doing this. So however they have it set up it will link it if it recognizes the product. Some of our abbreviations throw it off (not all..seems to recognize KCKT and KCCC)

I thought it was kind of neat!

CurlyQMom 01-22-2010 07:44 AM

Pretty ingenious marketing imo. Plus it saves trips to check out the acronyms for new folks. Even better, I can get quick ingredient reads on things - which rocks.

pedaheh 01-22-2010 08:08 AM

Hmmmm... Not sure how I feel about that. Lets try an experiment. I won't link anything.

AG re:coil
Kinky-Curly Curling Custard
Kinky-Curly Knot Today
DevaCurl One Conditioner
Jessicurl Rockin' Ringlets Styling Potion

gekko422 01-22-2010 09:14 AM

They linked Curl Junkie Aloe Fix gel in one of my previous posts.

ETA: But apparently not in this one, did I spell it wrong? Just testing things now.

CJ Aloe Fix gel
Miss Jessie's Quick Curl cream

pedaheh 01-22-2010 10:03 AM

My stuff linked without me doing it.
Let's try the Deva again
Deva Curl One Conditioner
Deva One Conditioner

goobernut 01-22-2010 10:05 AM

Its seems really random, I've noticed that its linking CCCC lite as CCCC. With an incorrect link.

I'm with Peda, I'm not sure how I feel about this. It is marketing GENIUS, but it sorta gives me the willies.

I've noticed that Deva products don't always link. I saw one for Deva No-Poo, but it doesn't link Deva Curl No-Poo. (I think, I'll have to check it when I post this hehehe).

Obviously they don't have the recognition software programed to recognize ALL of their products. Apparently, I always misspell product names because even when they are in curl mart, and will link for other people, they don't always link for me.

NatureWaves 01-22-2010 10:29 AM

I wonder if you can't see the links in your own posts?
Your CCCC linked for me goobernut.

angel29ish 01-22-2010 10:37 AM

Here's the thread about this new feature:

Your CCCC linked for me goobernut.
The links take a bit to show up. Goober's weren't there at first, and then they were.

goobernut 01-22-2010 11:56 AM

Right, right after I did it, it wasn't there -- like for 5 mins or so, but now when I come back to the thread a little while later they are there. Interesting!

Can't decide how I feel about this. Part of me loves the user-friendliness of it. Part of me dislikes the commercial aspect.

The old fogie part of me is all like, "Back in MY day, when I was a newbie, I had to SEARCH for the product names, try to decipher the acronyms (before the Big Acronym List was created), and THEN go to curlmart to find the listings."

AND I WALKED 5 MILES IN THE SNOW! BAREFOOT! AND WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY HAIR PRODUCTS WHEN I WAS A KID; HAVE I REMINDED YOU OF THAT LATELY????

ok, I'm done now. Ah, that felt good!

But this site is a commercial site. What else is going to pay for the servers and site maintenance, including these boards, other than advertising and CurlMart sales?

Gah, I remember those days. Back in 1994 or so, my husband used to be sitting on the floor with some old laptop with text scrolling across the screen. He was obsessed with this thing called the World Wide Web. I was like, "Hey, whatever floats your boat."

My only dalliances up to that point were the earliest type of intranets and AOL. That all changed in very short order, however, once graphics and HTML got going.

What? My curly hair site doesn't pay for and run itself?
You make a good point.
Thank goodness when I was a young curly they did have the secret decoder ring (acronym thread). I don't know what I would have done without it.

I was pretty sure it was funded by one of those MacArthur genius grants.... or maybe those Nobel Peace Prize folks. (Just kidding! Your point is well-taken. I just tend to forget, because I try so hard to avoid the pop-up ads! I mean, dang, like I'm not spending enough on hair products?)

YUP right on the nose

I actually think it's great because it will eliminate the guesswork with the acronyms. If it drives traffic to curlmart then so be it. It will be a tremendous help to the newbs and it will stop the kind of newbie questions like "What's KCCC"
