Help? I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed (and trying again)

Basically my hair is 2c/3a, and I really want to start the no-poo method. I tried a while ago but didn't bother finding the right conditioner/styling products, and just gave up. Now I only shampoo every so often, but I know I'm not doing it right.

SO I've been reading reading reading trying to find the best products that aren't too expensive (I definitely do not have money to be spending on super expensive hair products), and it's left me feeling extremely overwhelmed.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what they use? Preferably something I could find at a store and not have to special order online? Thanks!

ps: I don't even know what shampoo to use to start me off, what conditioner to use, and what styling product to use after (I like mousse, is there a good mousse out there?). Thank you SO much!
This is a good link.

I'm a cheapskate CG....

Co-wash: Suave Naturals or VO5
Rinse-out conditioner: L'oreal Vive Pro Nutri Gloss for long hair that is curly/wavy (make sure it's this particula one -- the other Vive Pro Nutri Gloss products are not CG)
Leave-in: Giovanni Direct
Curl enhancer: Aubrey Organics Mandarin Magic Moisturizing Hair Jelly (this is probably the most expensive item, I got it at the health food store for $10)
Gel: LA Looks Sport Gel or Herball Essence Totally Twisted (both around $3 at drugstores); during humid weather Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee (Walgreen's has this for around $9)

I've been really happy with the results I get with these products; all are cheap and available at drugstores, supermarkets, Target, Walmart, etc.. The only one I had to track down was the AOMM; the local health food store had it.

BTW, kathymack on this forum sells samples of many of the higher-end products. So you could try a small amount before investing $$$ in a product that might not work for you.
2a/b right now; 2c when it's longer
Fine/iii density/high porosity

Current favorites:
Suave Naturals Coconut co-wash
GVP Protein Restructuring Conditioner
GVP Conditioning Balm
Eco-Styler, LALSG, BRHG, Garnier Curl Shaping Spray Gel
ACV rinse 1x per week
I'm a cheap skate too.
cowash: white rain
rinse out: garnier triple nutrition or Generic Value product Conditioning Balm. GVP CB is Sally beauty supply's generic version of boilage. I use a pea size of the GVP CG as a leave-in
Gel: Biosilk Rock Hard Gel-it is not cheap, but I need a super hard hold
Protein Treatment: Ion effective hair care (2$ for a packet at sally beauty)

Target sells trial sizes of the giovanni shampoo. They are sold in the aisle near the burt's bees stuff. I thought Herbal essence Totally Twisted gel was nice, but not enough hold for me.

Great ideas you two, thanks. Maybe I'll drop off the unopened one at the homeless shelter, and use the partially opened one for my legs (just curious- do you use it like shaving cream or afterwards?). Thanks!
My aunt uses it like shaving cream. I've never tried it myself.

Holy Lord I don't even know where to begin right now. I just finished washing my hair and starting w/ my new products for the first time, and my hair is already feeling better I swear! Maybe it's a bit of a placebo effect, but I feel like a new woman haha.

Also I used some old conditioner as shaving gel and my legs are super smooth. You guys have basically just given me a make over haha. And I did an olive oil/honey deep conditioner treatment that I read on here. Now I smell like a mixture of honey and lavender (I bought some new lotion today from whole foods, too). I love it!

Have 2B/3A thick, coarse hair. I don't know how to test the porosity (is that a word).

Here's what I'm using so far:

Co-wash: Suave
Rinse out & Leave-in: GVP CB
Deep conditioner: Olive oil and honey concoction

Product: HE Tousle Me Softly Mousse (I am using it up before I switch to gel... or maybe I'll just stay w/ it if I have luck).

It may not be placebo effect. You're not the first person to report their hair is instantly better. Glad things are going well.

I have to agree. My hair got DRASTICALLY better the first day, and it's been slowly improving since then.
It so wasn't a placebo effect. I "washed" my hair again Monday, and it is freaking fabulous now haha. It's SO much softer and shinier and silkier already!

The only thing I still need to master is second day hair/hair after it's been pulled back. I've been pineappling (I think that's the term) and putting a silky head cap on at night, and I will say my second day hair is BETTER than before, but still not excellent. :-\

Thanks everyone for all the help and feedback.
