Product Recs for a Newbie on a Budget. :)

Hey everybody!

I've been lurking here for a while and have gotten a lot of information. I haven't gone CG yet, but I'm getting ready to. I seem to have 2c hair with a little bit of 3a, but sometimes it behaves more like a 2b, but that seems to depend upon how I've treated it. I have essentially "good hair" without many issues, but it definitely hasn't reached its potential. My hair strands are about a medium mostly, I'd say. They're fine in some parts and the occasional strand is coarse (I used to do salon protein treatments and now I don't think my hair likes protein). I do have a lot of hair though, and it's prone to a little bit of frizz and dryness. I'm not sure how porous my hair is...I'd say medium. It doesn't take my hair incredibly long to air dry. Maybe an hour or two at most? Anyway, I am just now starting to care for my curls/waves properly, as I used to straighten with a brush and blowdryer, or load my hair with silicones to "smooth the wave" for years.

The thing is, I don't have a ton of money to spend on the wrong products, so I'd like to know if there are any easily available, reasonably priced products that you can recommend. Ideally, these would be things that are easily available in the US or Australia, although I don't mind ordering something that won't have exorbitant shipping costs. I also don't mind spending a little more money for something amazing, but I want value and if I can get the same result from something I got at the drugstore, I'd rather go that route. I live between Honolulu and Sydney so humidity is a concern. I'm totally new to this so I will appreciate all information!

Thanks so much!

Welcome. I'll give product recommendations a shot. Women from Australia complain that they have problems finding CG products. I think you will likely have better luck with US products. I only use cheap products and won't be able to suggest anything that is worth spending to have shipped.
Cowash: Suave naturals, white rain or V05 conditioner
Rinse Out: If you have dry hair, I'd suggest trying Garnier Frutis Triple Nutrition first. It is very moisturizing and cheap. It is oil heavy and some people have hair that doesn't like oils.
Leave in: You can start by using a bit of your cowash.
Gel: This depends on how much hold you need. There are many more choices.
Medium hold: Herbal Essences Totally Twisted
Hard hold: Herbal Essences Set Me Up, LA Looks Sports Gel (I hated it, but some people like it and it is super cheap)
Super hard hold: Biosilk Rock Hard Gelle (my HG), Chi gel
Low Poo: I don't use these, but giovanni and burts bees make low poos. If you end up having to pay shipping, I've heard the more expensive low poos work better.
CG products are listed on the left side of this blog.

Kathy Mack sells samples of more expensive products. I have no idea if she ships internationally. If your hair has a medium texture and porosity, you can probably use some protein in your stylers. It' is not a requirement, but don't be afraid of them.

2a (nc.com) 2bFi (Fia), very fine, thin, low/normal elasticity, porous, CG, doesn't get weighed down
Cowash: Tresemme naturals
Rinse out/leave in: Renpure Organics (red)
Curl enhancer: FSG
Gel: BRHG, Salon care aloe, Ecostyler Krystal (normal dews)
PT: ION effective care, IAgirl's gelatin PT
Low Poo: renpure (red), Ion swimmers
Thanks! These are all products that I can easily find here in Hawaii. It's especially helpful how you broke the gels down by the amount of hold they have, because other than getting my hair done by a brilliant, curly hairstylist, I've never used any type of gel in my hair. I've only used serums, glossing creams, etc. Because of that, I'm a little scared of a harder hold so I think I'll check out the Totally Twisted first.
Oh, I sorta missed that you were in Hawaii. I thought you were somewhere between Hawaii and Australia. If you have a sally beauty supply...
GVP conditioning balm is a biolage knock off. I like it slightly better then the GFTN. About 5$.
Ecostyler krystal is on sale for 3$ a giant tub this month. Try scrunching it into half dry hair.
If you decide you want to do PT's again, Ion Effective Hair Care is a milder protein treatment for 2-3$ a packet. I get several treatments per packet on my short, fine, thin hair.
Lustrasilk Olive oil and cholesterol or mango (something or other, and another one. Super cheap for a big tub. Can be used as a leave-in, rinse out, or DT. Huge thread on it. Some sally's carry it, some don't.
Beyond the zone gel (I forget the exact name) is a hard hold gel. It has polyquats if you want to avoid those.

Sally Girl eye shadow is really nice for 1$ and I've heard nice things about the sally girl lip glosses.

Target has travel sizes of giovanni and burts bees low poos for 2$. They are in the natural products aisle, not the shampoo aisle.

Hi and welcome.
Yeah us aussie have it tough on the CG product front, but if you pop into the aussie swap board we have lots of threads about product recommendation (isn't a lot of swapping actually going on - we just natter) If you have any questions be sure to drop by we're all super friendly
Not sure what shipping is like to you from Australia vs us but definitely suss it out.

Thanks for letting me know that lots of Australian women on here say they have a hard time finding CG friendly products, so I can stock up. I wouldn't have guessed because I saw so much more curly hair in Sydney than I see here in Honolulu...but it's not like Honolulu has much in the way of non-drugstore and non-ridiculously-pricey (like Kerastase, for example) products that are geared towards curls, anyway.

We don't have a Sally's, unfortunately. I hear so much about it on here and MUA and I wish we had one. I'll check to see if there's free shipping within the US. Thanks again for more suggestions!

P.S.: I don't know what polyquats are. I'm really new to this. =p

I've ordered some things on ebay that were from Australia and shipping was pretty expensive. My boyfriend is Australian and whenever he orders from the US, the shipping is insanely expensive or it can take up to two months to receive a package. So I'm going to want to avoid ordering from the US. That reminds me to make sure I search for Australian based sites for beauty products.
