I'm now 37 days in and thought I'd try naked hair again. I made a little timeline to show my progress Co-Wash with AOWC, RO with DCOne, and a little KCKT as a LI.

I'm still pretty new to this forum, though I'm allergic to sulfates, so I've been sulfate-free for some time now. I traditionally have kept my hair pretty short, but I've decided to grow it out. It's 2b/2c, and it's harder to tell this short, but as it gets longer, I get big sausage curls mixed with straight pieces. It's very strange.

Naked hair...No volume and not as much definition as I like... :/ But, I still get lazy and do it from time to time. Gives my hair a little breather!

I'm barely a wavy. I have a "flip" at the end of my hair. ROFL. That's it. Literally. But I think my daughter is a wavy? Or a curly? Who knows...

This was a good hair day. Just before CG at Easter. I did nothing to her hair besides scrunch and spray a lil detangler in there. I brushed the front to pull it out of her face and have it look nice. LOL

Not sure if she's wavy or curly but she sure is my lil cutie!

My niece REALLY has curly hair. You don't have to do ANYTHING to it to get it to curl, but on this day, their hair looked VERY similar! I'm hoping the curl will stay since her daddy's hair is very curly! (and quite undermoisturized but he doesn't listen!!)

Its been a long time since I slept with wet hair or left it without products, but the weather's been hot and humid here, and I've been putting so much conditioner and gel in my hair , late last night I'd had enough.
Here it is, washed with shea moisture curl and shine shampoo and pillow dried, no products, conditioner, or leave in.

crwritt, your hair is stunning for having done so little to it! Wow!

This is actually my first post here in the forums, but I figured what better way to introduce myself than with my naked hair?

I usually wear my hair in a loose bun because I work around food and I do a lot of bike riding, hiking, and other activities that don't usually do so well with loose hair. I started wearing my hair up more after my most recent hair cut, too... I suspect that by "taking some of the weight" out of my hair, my stylist also kind messed up my hair. I haven't really liked the way it's looked down since then. Oh well. I've never been a big product user, but I know that my curls could use a little help.

Here is a picture of my totally naked hair: no product, just parted and air-dried.

Hey guys! I just joined! I'm challenging myself to go a year with no heat. So far I'm about a month in and I'm LOVING my natural hair. Even though it's a bit crazy looking

If "taking some of the weight out" meant she used thinning shears, yeah she probably did screw it up. Those are a big no no for curly hair.

I think you have stunning curls! I can tell your canopy is more damaged than the underlayers, which tends to be typical. I have that fine top layer of hair that just wants to frizz & not curl as well! Do you know your hair properties - texture, density, porosity?

Thank you!

I'm not sure if he used thinning shears, but I suspect that's what they were. I wish I had known that they were a big no no several months ago! I just hope my hair will eventually fix itself.

I tried to figure out the porosity, texture, and density roughly at home the other night just so I have a basic knowledge of what my hair is like, but I'm still not 100% sure. Seems like my hair is pretty fine, maybe a little higher porosity than is ideal.

The damage caused by thinning shears won't fix itself until it is cut off. Thinning shears basically cut up the shaft of the hair, so hairs within each curl & clump are different lengths. It causes the clumps to split apart, it creates frizz... it's like the individual hairs cant get themselves together. With straight hair thats obviously not an issue, but it is for curls. It will grow out unevenly like that so until the thinned parts are cut off, with straight cut across the hair shaft, unfortunately it won't fix itself.

However, if you're not in the mood for a big haircut lol, you can go CG & treat your hair nicely & restore its health & moisture, until it grows out long enough for you to feel comfortable trimming it. I dont know if youve ever straightened it & damaged it over the years, but its still beneficial to find a gentle, sulfate free shampoo & silicone free conditioner & even if youre not a product user, that will make a difference in its overall health. Fine hair also tends to like protein. Check out people's signatures for their hair properties & start with some of the products they use - its a great way to learn & get started!

Oh, that is so discouraging to hear I've always had long hair like you see in the photos and I am so not in the mood to get a big hair cut...like pretty much ever...so it's probably going to take a lot of trims to get it fixed. Thankfully I only straighten my hair once in a great while (like once every year or so) and I moved away from sulfates and silicones at least a year ago in an effort to be kinder to my body and the environment rather than my hair. Glad to know I made a good change for my hair on accident, though! I tried my first ACV rinse today, but I couldn't really tell whether or not it did much since I had to get on my bike and ride to work almost immediately after getting out of the shower.

My routine at the moment is completely natural with no nasty chemicals, I always air dry my hair, but I've learned A LOT from reading around in the forums and on the site already. I have a looooooong way to go to healthy hair, haha.

Thank you for the awesome tips, lcl0706! They are much appreciated.

Sorry to be a downer on the thinning thing your hair is still beautiful no matter what & it sounds like youre already doing a lot right! As far as helping the canopy curl better, plopping might be good for that, & using an LI to keep moisture in it, & staying away from traditional terry cloth towels that cause frizz. If you havent yet, I'd definitely check out a PT if you think its fine! That can add strength fine hair by nature doesnt have & encourage the curl pattern

I'm just glad I know about the thinning thing now, lcl! Thanks again for the advice. I love the guy who usually does my hair--he's a friend of mine who gives me free cuts and just got his license not too long ago, so I don't blame him for not knowing much about curly hair. Apparently they don't teach stylists much about that in school from what I hear. But I'm planning on scheduling an appointment with a curly expert to help correct some of the damage done by the thinning shears.

And I hate to be such a noob, but I'm assuming that LI stands for leave-in? And PT...protein??? Sorry...I'm still fresh

yep protein treatment. there is another thread on here that has a link to a basic recipe you can make in your kitchen. I did the Gelatin one yesterday and had no frizz this morning. then it rained. lol. There is also a Vegan friendly recipe i believe. (not sure how environmentally friendly you are)

Thank you for the tips, kstan! I am constantly trying to make my hair (and other body, etc.) routines as environmentally friendly as possible, so I like the sound of something I can make in my own kitchen . Is there a "vegan" version of the one you used today? Or another recipe you've tried that you like?

science-y hair blog: What's Cookin': Vegetarian Protein Treatment for Hair

this one is how to do PT with beer. not sure if you can find vegan but its def vegetarian friendly. I would just read the PT recipe thread for some more helpful info. I've only done 1 pt, so i'm no expert.

I read the beer article and it totally seems worth trying. And I found the PT thread, so I'll definitely have to spend some time reading that and experimenting. Thank you!

^^ You can also make your own hair gel which is very moisturizing, cheap, and easy. All you really need is whole (not ground!!) golden flax seeds (health food store or HyVee's organic section) and water. I made mine last night with purified water, seeds, and 3 drops of coconut oil.

Here's the original thread on it! No-fail flax seed gel - I finally did it...TWICE!
