What did you learn about hair this week?

In the spirit of "What did you do to your hair today?" I thought I'd start "What did you learn about hair this week?"
Information can be very scattered on this site. I thought this thread would be a good place to collect interesting information and tidbits.
About once a week answer either or both questions:

What did you learn about hair in general this week?

What did you learn about hair in general this week?
Jojoba oil (technically a wax) is the only oil that contains protein.
Conditioners similar to Jasmine's Babbasu and Shea can be ordered whole sale. (I'm behind on this one. I should have read the monster thread.)
OMG Iforgot to add, I learned Walmart sells coconut oil!!
What did you learn about your hair this week?
My hair prefers to alternate cowashing and water washing.

What did you learn about hair in general this week: I learned there is a category of ingredients called "demulcents" which can make a product mucousy and are supposedly good for curly hair. More investigation is needed

What did you learn about your hair this week:
It adores Spiral Solutions Curl Enhancing Jelly. It's found it's perfect winter routine. No Poo, Darcy's Pumpkin Seed, Jasmine's Babassu, Super Soak, Spiral Solutions CEJ, Bioterra gel

Fine/thin 2c/3a, Low-Medium Porosity, Dry!
That soaking flax seeds is good for a harder hold fsg.
What did you learn about hair in general this week: well, I am still a newbie, so I learned a lot of things... cannot really wrote them all down or I'd be writing half of NC info here!

What did you learn about your hair this week: it loves keratin. I used some before styling a couple of times and my hair felt much better and waves lasted longer
I have no new general hair knowledge (at least that I can think of right now), but I found out that MY hair loves loves loves a hard hold gel, and doesn't seem to get frizzy when I use a leave-in with glycerin, even in the winter.

What did you learn about hair in general this week: Hair is like a fingerprint, beautifully unique.

What did you learn about your hair this week: It loves ACV rinse (first one on Wed) and does not like any of the cheap gels I have tried (it told me that it is worth the $30 I spent on Amazon to get BRHG 32oz.). I agreed.

What did you learn about hair in general this week?

+2 on the demulcents

What did you learn about your hair this week?

Yes, its nearly straight without product. No change since CG.So my hair hasn't gotten curlier with CG, but maybe I've just gotten better at learning how to style it?

What I've learned about hair this week:

A lot! I've only been reading up on CG this last week, so plopping and pineapples are new. I also never knew that some silicones are water soluble.

What I've learned about my hair this week:

I learned that I really should comb out my hair if I intend on washing my hair upside down in the tub...aka with a detachable shower head or under the faucet. My hair holds gel well, but it's a love/hate relationship with it. Love that it holds the shape and gives some shine; hate the crunch and wet look all the time (even after attempting to scrunch out the crunch). I suppose that could be the specific gel, or just me and a lack of knowledge on how to use it and style with it.

What I've learned about hair this week
I've learned that a good cut makes all the difference in 1) how your hair looks and 2) how you feel about yourself.

I had an Ah-Ha moment, so I thought I'd post it here in the spirit of learning

For months now I couldn't figure out what was going on with my roots. They felt dry all the time -- and were squeaky in the shower. They never got wet, but were slick and smooth. I have been assuming that my hair was growing in low-porosity. This hair also felt thicker -- just plain weird and different.

It wasn't new hair. It was waxy build-up. I'm assuming, that its sebum build up. It was seriously tenacious stuff. My Kenra Chelating shampoo wasn't even cleansing it off. Its a sulfate shampoo -- though an alternative sulfate -- that the curly chemist says is harsh, though now I'm doubting that hah. When it all finally clicked, I pulled out my oily scalp shampoo from before CG and gave my scalp a good scrub. It got rid of it. Now my roots aren't weird or thick or squeaky. Allllll gone. I'd blame this on the a-cone, but really, only on my roots? I could feel the delineation in where it ended. And to be quite honest, I was only using the a-cone 1x a week AND the low-poos I'm using should have cleansed it off. Heck the Kenra sulfate shampoo should have gotten it off. however, the one thing I have noticed, is that low-poos aren't very efficient at actually removing body oils or bacteria (that's a long story btw).

After cleansing with the shampoo, I've been using CJ DFCC and that seems to help with keeping it off. I'm also going to watch and see how long it takes to build back up.

My hair:

1. Loves FSG unlike any other gel/mousse/pudding.
2. Can be styled curly just on the lower half. This solves my feeling of discomfort with having tangled untouchable product-matted hair on top of my head. (And its a plus for me look-wise, since I don't *want* root volume, with my long hair and long face.) I can now touch wurls! Excellent.

Dislikes: soap bars, glycerin, protein.
Yawns at: all gels (even LALSG), Seamollient.

I have learned that my hair and mousse just don't get along. After using mousse almost daily for the last 2 weeks (I think, time in my world flies) my hair was just snapping off and I even found some split ends! I just cut of like 5 inches, ugh! Anyways, no more mousse for me, at least for awhile, if ever.

My hair loves protein, plopping, and diffusing! Trying to find a way to style and air dry.
It's been a little less then a week, but I'm learning a lot this week.
What did you learn about hair in general this week?
This website not only has a conditioner that is reported to be good, but has good prices for coconut oil and jojoba oil. Coconut oil is 1/2 what I paid at the health food store. I've never ordered from the website and have no idea about the quality or shipping costs. I also have no idea how the prices compare to others on the internet.

Hair texture can change with age. (who knew?)
Oat protein is a mild protein.
I'm trying to learn about demeculants. Demeculants can help moisturize dry hair.
If you hate FOTE you can still use other aloe based products.

A low poo can do wonders.
1/4-1/2 of the things I think I've learned about my hair will turn out to be wrong.

I just ordered from Organic Creations. Actually, I placed my order last Friday. The website says they are taking 9 days to ship because they're so busy. I ordered a sample of the conditioner and some butters and oils. I'm trying to be patient...

What did you learn about hair in general this week?

I've learned a lot and continue to learn thanks to the awesome 2s here.

I've learned more about porosity and thickness, and about protein and silicones (mostly the a-cone). I recently learned what a Denman is. I've also learned that there's a Sally about 25 minutes away...I had one or two close to me when I lived in Florida, but I've never seen one here in Victoria, BC. Yay Google!

What did you learn about your hair this week?

It doesn't like Big Tease gel from Lush...it's got great hold, but it is quite drying on my hair and it never feels like I've scrunched the crunch out. Too bad because it smells like The Olive Branch shower gel and is my favourite scent there.

Umm, still playing with plopping and pineappling. Pineappling seems to work ok, but the underside of my hair loses considerable wave and curl...the ends and top are mostly ok and I guess that's the important part. Plopping leaves me with some weird waves/curls on the top of my head/front so I am experimenting with the time and gel. Without gel (but with a light styling foam) and about 10 minutes doesn't really do much, so I might try 15 minutes with gel, or overnight without gel (see if I can get soft and defined curls that way) when I have a day off the next day and don't have to worry about looking dorky unless I go out.

I need to figure out how to get more clumps...most of my curls seem stringy. Hoping the CG or mod CG or spritz and condish will help.

This thread is great! I have learned that a low poo once a week or so is good for my hair, it likes a little protein from Avalon Organics GPB and a great cut from a curly stylist would be awesome!! mmm... now to find one.

Like plunkybug, I too learned what a Denman is! But, there are like 7000 different varieties. Would be interested in knowing which one people are using!

What did you learn about your hair this week?
I learned a new clipping technique that encourages crown waves for me. Here is the video link: http://curllove.blogspot.com/2008/03...ng-videos.html. She pinches and clips, making a little hump (which, on me, when unclipped makes a wave).

I love this thread! Everyone's research is now combined in one spot where we can all benefit! Cheers to Peda for thinking of it!!
