RE: Blenders
I've been making smothies for a while now (all types) and I find that a stick blender beats the traditional kind hands down.
It can't handle chopping ice (but then, neither could my regular blender), but it does just fine with all kinds of frozen fruit. Added benefit: you can mix in whatever kind of container you want! It's especially wonderfull for pureeing soups (instead of messily transferring the hot soup to your blender).
My standard single-serving smoothie recipe:
1/2 cup milk (whether cow's, soy, rice or coconut)
1/2 cup plain non-fat yogurt (I prefer Greek style)
1-1/2 cups berries or 1 cup berries & 1/2 frozen banana
1 heaping Tbsp. ground flax seed
1 tsp. unrefined flax or coconut oil
1/2 scoop unflavored whey protein powder
1 Tbsp. agave syrup (if desired)
There are dozens of variations of course.
Another fall/winter favorite (when fresh berries are expensive):
Pumpkin Smoothie
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup yogurt
1/3 cup plain canned pumpkin (not pumkin pie filling)
1 Tbsp. ground flax seed
1 tsp. flax or coconut oil
1/2 scoop whey protein powder
1 tsp. real vanilla extract
1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
1 Tbsp. pure maple or agave syrup (if desired)
You can also add 1/2 cup apricot nectar or fresh orange juice to this.

Soo gonna try this. I'm in love with smoothies - especially since it's summer here. Plus these are so much better for me then the sugary ones you can buy at the juice bars here. Can't wait to try some of your recipes out.

you've converted me I've been having them all week. My SO and family did give me a weird look the first few times, but my brother approved of it once he tried one of my concoctions.

Just made my first one!
Had some fresh pineapple and fresh papaya chopped up already, and added some fresh blueberries and water, and a tiny bit of sugar. Delicious! And so easy! I'm going to make a habit of this.

This is an old thread, but it deserves a revival!
I've been having a breakfast protein smoothie and a green smoothie almost every day. Feeling super energetic.
My Breakfast Smoothie
1 scoop Whey protein - vanilla flavor
1 banana
10 oz 1% milk
Optional add ins: 1 tbsp cacao nibs, 1 tsp maca powder, 2 tbsp organic peanut butter (healthy fats are important!)
My Green Smoothie
1 BIG handful of baby spinach
10 oz apple juice
1 banana (can swap it out for other fruit, like peaches)
Optional add ins: 1.5 tsp of spirulina
Drink up and enjoy!

Splenda is a very dangerous substance. I don't sweeten my smoothies with anything, just add my greens, frozen bananas and some grapes (all organic) anneh
