I have curly, not wavy or straight, hair and therefore don't tend to visit that area of NC. ... And in my personal experience, it is indeed certain curlies who most often struggle with a racially-charged "good hair/ bad hair" complex. You might not be aware of this problem, but I am, and stated as much. Sorry you've inexplicably taken it personally.
