It depends. Coconut oil IS protein rich, but some hair responds well to it and others don't. For example, my hair likes coconut oil in small doses. The only proteins I can use like there's no tomorrow are hydrolyzed proteins and amino acids. Coconut oil, silk protein, whatever ones I'm forgetting to list I can get away with...sparingly.
That being said, my favorite shea moisture product (besides the shampoo) is the curl and hold style milk. I use this and the smoothie (NEVER at the same time though!) on rotation when my hair could use more protein since I don't need it much. They're both great as stand alone products but if I use them together my hair gets all kinds of dry and brittle feeling.
