I agree that it sounds like you're not getting all the shed hairs out, and this may be what's causing the matting. You may want to detangle more often, or use conditioner or something with more slip than the coconut oil to help you get all those shed hairs out. It may look scary to see all the hairs coming out, but like Lisa said, this is normal.
