I discovered something yesterday. I know the most common signs of OC are soft but limp and lifeless hair when dry, a mushy feeling when wet - like seaweed, and stretchy hair. But I discovered a new sign I have not read anywhere nor have I experienced it before. My hair felt RUBBERY.

My hair was feeling very weird for several days. DT made it no better. It wasn't tangly or dry...it just felt 'weird.' And when I ran my fingers through it, I felt strong resistance like the hair was grabbing at my skin. It finally occurred to me that it felt like rubber. Like trying to handle fabric with rubber kitchen gloves on. I searched online and all I could find was the rubbery feeling due to hair that had been subjected to aggressive chemical processes and was severely damaged. I have not done any chemical treatments on my hair in over five years so I knew that was not my issue.

When dry, I had lost some curl, but I attributed that to the low dews and length (mid back). Also, when dry, it looked bad but I couldn't put my finger on just *how* it looked bad. I still can't describe it - dull, stringy maybe?

Then I noticed my hair was very stretchy when wet - it was not really stretchy before...the rubbery feeling came first. Maybe it was stretchy and I missed the sign but regardless - the rubbery feeling was the primary symptom.

Anyway, when I noticed the stretchiness, I decided to do a PT. For my hair, this consists of using a protein heavy conditioner and I don't leave it in for any length of time. Just the few minutes it takes to really work it into my hair with the wide tooth comb and Denman. ! I followed with a moisturizing conditioner.

Instant improvement!!

I noticed a small amount of stretch still today so I did one more PT with a small amount of the condish and worked quickly so it wasn't on my hair long. I followed with moisture again.

I wanted to post this because I hadn't seen this description anywhere and it was the first major sign this time of my hair needing protein. My hair did not behave at all the way it usually does when I get to an OC state (I've done it 2-3 times before.)

While I will still read my hair and do what it needs on a daily basis - I think I will add a scheduled PT once a week (as described above...anything stronger will kill my hair!)

2b wavy, medium texture, low porosity, med-high density. Protein finicky.
My routine:
Cleansing: DCNP, every 4-5 days (occasionally use CJ cleansers).
RO: CJSC, occasionally use JCDC
LI: KCKT or CJSL
Gel: KCCC, CJCIAB for 2nd day hair (sometimes third)

Heat is my friend: warm water rinses, steam caps, and diffuse dry. I love CLU cloths and my Denman.
