: For those of you that are curious, "diagnosis" for my hair loss. Product suggestions?
*I posted this in the 2 section, but meant to post it here*
Hi all, I haven't posted here in quite awhile, but I thought I'd give an update to anyone that might remember me! For anyone who is interested, this was my original post:
Frustrated with my hair.. losing a lot & products don't seem to be working anymore.
This will be a little long, apologies in advance!
So after I wrote that thread, I went to see a dermatologist in September. She ended up doing a scalp biopsy, which confirmed her thoughts that I had what's called Telogen effluvium.
It's basically a fancy name for hair loss that occurs after some shock to the system. Generally, it's a short term thing and resolves itself over time. For whatever reason, mine has continued for years, so it's considered chronic. There's really no treatment for it, go figure.
I had new blood work done recently that all came back perfectly normal. I don't have a copy of it yet, but my primary care ran a bunch of specific thyroid tests, etc. just to make sure, all looked fine.
So it's a good thing, but still no real reason as to why I lose so much hair
I'm continuing to stay off birth control (have been off since June '12), taking 5,000mcg of Biotin daily, along with vitamin D & a multi vitamin. I've also started going to a place here and having laser therapy done.. it's a cold laser, so you don't feel anything, supposed to stimulate hair growth. This is the place:
I've gone 6 or 7 times now (I go once a week), and haven't really noticed any changes in how much hair I lose, but I do think my hair looks somewhat thicker..? Maybe I'm just getting used to it looking this way, not sure.
Right now, I'm just trying to keep my hair healthy and happy.. I'm still not quite sure if I'm a 2 or a 3a, but these were the results of my Curl Genie profile:
Texture: Fine (no big surprise there)
I wash my hair 3x a week, usually with Nioxin.. it seems to give me more volume. I condition with the Deva Curl conditioner daily, and once a week I do a PT with the Curl Junkie Repair Me. I style it daily.. I can't go longer than that without it being all flat and gross.
Product wise I mostly use Deva Curl Angel, the Deva Curl foam, and this new foam by Samy that I bought on a whim to try. Seems like my hair does best with light weight products, so the foams work well. But it is still dry to me, would like to try to solve that problem.
So if anyone has any newer suggestions (I haven't been on here for awhile so I'm out of the product loop), I'd appreciate it! This is the newest picture I have of myself so you guys can see my hair, taken back in Sept..
