I agree with korkscrew on either cutting the damage off at once or trimming it off over time. Ultimately, it's how you feel about the health and look of your hair that will guide your decision. I feel that anyone who has BC'd or done a transition knows what it was like to finally let go of the useless or damaged hair that isn't doing anything to help make our curls look and feel good. And the better you feel about your hair, the less fixated you will be on it and before you know it your length will return and then some.
