Hi dragon, sorry to hear about the hair crisis.
Yes, your hair can grow long. Anyone's hair can grow long, it all depends on how you care for it. Hair grows regardless, its retaining length that's the problem.
Like the above poster said, its best to have your hair saturated with water and a conditioner full of slip when you detangle. I, don't use a wide tooth comb to detangle I use my fingers. If you have the patience and time then you may want to start doing it that way. The benefits are less breakage hence more length retention.
The best way to get rid of damage is to trim the damaged hair off. Don't have to cut it all off, but do trims as the new growth comes in. I'm sure there's another way to repair damage, but that's the only way I know how. Hope this helps
