Once you determine your properties, you can look for others with hair like yours and see what they use (in signatures.) It's the best place to start.
If your hair is damaged, it's possible that protein might help. Why don't you try PTs followed by DTs??
While I understand that people are hesitant to loose length, there's really nothing pretty about more hair that doesn't look good. If you can get a good haircut that shapes your hair well and adds the right layers, you may find that it helps with your frizzy crown/canopy. I know it really helped me when I had that issue (which is VERY common.)
