You can put your normal conditioner in a spray bottle with water, and that might work better as a detangler. Also, most curlies don't brush their hair when it's dry. I personally have 2c hair that doesnt look good when it's brushed. It just becomes frizzy and big. Is it possible you could just wet down the tangles, then gently pull them apart with your fingers? That way it won't frizz much, if that's a problem. You should be holding her hair at the top when you brush it, so you aren't tugging on her head and hurting her.
To prevent tangles, I would recommend a satin bonnet too. Also, there are satin pillow cases you can try too. If her hair is long enough, you could pineapple it.
