My hair curls in a similar manner and I'm also more wavy at the roots. I consider myself 3A. Especially since my hair does have the potential to spring up a lot when the weather is just right. Also I have thicker stranded hair and I still consider most gels to be a little heavy. (I prefer the light hold of curl creams and jellies.) However, I think I haven't figured out how to use gels yet. Styling technique, you know. I think it's a matter of watering them down so they're not so, I don't know, harsh.

I think a lot of wavies tend to use mousse followed by gel actually. Not that you're wavie. But since you say you'd like more hold and volume they tend to be into that. And I've been trying to read up to help my mother who is a 2b/2c.
