I have slightly different hair than you, but I had the whole "three layers of different curls" problem. A proper haircut solved that instantly. If you develop a bad shape when you let it dry curly, my first thought is maybe a different hair cut from a curly-friendly stylist. Even if you're trying for less curl, someone who understands curls is still the best to help with that.
For me, a light combing with a wide-toothed comb when wet will instantly loosen my near-ringlets out into bumpy poofy waves.
