We have similar properties and your hair sounds a lot like mine (the way it used to behave) although your curl pattern is tighter. I highly recommend going CG. You would not believe the difference it made in my curl pattern, definition, and frizz. I've never had good hair like I've had the past five months. It's pretty incredible.

Also there are many inexpensive drugstore products that are CG approved (sulfate/silicone free). I'm sure your parents wouldn't mind picking you up a bottle of Suave or VO5 Conditioner and a gel to start off with. Check people's signatures with properties similar to yours to see what products they like. Maybe they'll work with your hair.
