I'm having a real hard time spotting the straight roots, sorry. You have nice strong curl pattern, even at the crown. (If there are certain areas that lack definition and can't be seen in the picture, I recommend a curl cream or FSG. Just a dab applied to the area to help it clump.) If you're having a hard time finding a gel that doesn't make your hair hard, crunchy or tacky, I'd switch to a gelly product. They are more natural and leave the hair touchably soft. For me at least. I also like Curl Junkie Pattern Pusha as it's a light hold gel that doesn't make me crunchy provided I use leave in.
I know our properties are different but my favorite leave ins are Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk (light), SM Curl Enhancing Smoothie (heavy/rich), and Kinky Curly Knot Today (light.) My favorite gellies are KCCC and homemade FSG. I really loathe hard crunchy producty hair and would love to get away with conditioner only styling but I still need a little something to help my hair clump and not frizz. Since your curl pattern is stronger I think a leave in and a bit of gelly would be enough. If it's enough for me and I'm 3A with naturally frizzy hair maybe it'd be enough for you with your lovely 3B curls.
Oh also I know another user with similar properties to you likes Kiss My Face Upper Management gel. I actually want to try that myself as it's light/medium hold and more natural.
