Only time I don't use products is when I get my haircut/highlight (which happened yesterday.) My hair doesn't look anywhere near as good as it does when I style it. As a matter of fact, it has a lot less volume.
When asking for help it's good to have more information about your hair--properties. It's also the best way to choose ingredients products. Here's a link to help you with yours Live Curly Live Free - Curly Hair Basics
Lack of volume on top is a common problem. One of the easier fixes is a good haircut. Long hair weighs down your curls. If you don't have appropriate layering, it weighs them down (and can cause that "triangle" look.) Haircut is the foundation for everything.
My hair is fine/low porosity. It loves protein. I do at least one PT a week and use a lot of products with protein. I find that protein tightens curl, adds volume and reduces frizz.
There are also techniques that can help--plopping and clipping. You can search for how to do those.
