I was around 11. Early, I suppose, but my mom always wore makeup which I think influenced me. By 12 I was full on with everything I could get my hands on. I lived for boys, romance, makeup, the whole 9 yards.

Your plan sounds just fine - not clownish at all.

ETA that was some 57 years ago. Pretty scandalous

I started playing with makeup, just for dress up fun, when I was 4. I didn't wear it out. ETA: Yes I did. Stage makeup for dance starting at 7. I have comical pic's. I had the bright 80's stripe blush down! When I was 10-12 (somewhere in there) my mom sold Mary Kay, and I was her assistant. I always set up the sample trays, and help her instruct makeup application. I was pretty good at it by that time. I think I only wore it for fun, on the weekends if we went to the mall, etc. until I started high school. My freshman year I would wear it to school, here and there. I always went through makeup phases. I really didn't start wearing makeup often/almost every day until I was in my 30's.
When I hear terms like "hipster" I think, who told cliques they could leave high school??
