Using scissors that are not sharp enough can cause split ends, and they are further up the hair than the split or white dot you were trimming off to begin with. Maybe purchase another pair of hairdressing scissors?
Having said that I do trim my hair with kitchen scissors, but I know mine are high quality and super sharp. I wouldn't ever use my nail scissors, they were blunt to begin with and more so after cutting tough nails.
