Hmmm. I don't know where you are (I'm in north SF Bay Area), but your climate sounds similar to mine. Do you know what your average dew points are? Dews will affect poof. Anyway, wind wind wind here, rain in the winter, so I need hard hold. The sports gel was OK, but didn't hold up to the wind enough for me. I use a mix of Kinky Curly Curling Custard (KCCC) and Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee (BRHG). I use enough to give me a really crunchy look and feel, but once I scrunch it all out I have great hair for at least two days. It won't hold up great to something like an afternoon gardening in wind, but nothing will. In those cases I just cover up with a Buff and squash my hair, lol.

I would try the sport gel first, and see if it works for you, because it's cheap. Use quite a bit. If it's too much, you can always go lighter.
