I have 4b/c hair. I don't use oils or moisturizers to unravel my braids for a braid-out.
I do 10 braids (w/ two-strand twisted ends) for my braid-outs. I used to do 16 braids but they became too difficult to unravel as my hair gained length. I braid pretty tight (for definition) but I make sure to keep the sections separate to avoid breakage. Two-strand twisting the ends makes takedown easier which means less stress on the ends.
Mid-strand splits are caused by combing and/or brushing. Here's more info: THE NATURAL HAVEN: Mid shaft splits: cause and prevention
You can prevent mid-strand splits by reducing and/or eliminating the use of the combs and brushes (finger-detangling, less passes of a comb/brush, etc.). You can eliminate mid-strand splits by cutting the damage strands.
