I started to mix all of my thickeners with water prior to adding them to keep them from clumping. I found that they would be lumpy, even with an immersion blender, if I didn't.
KM- I tried that once and ended up with one huge blob I couldn't get to mix in. I've been having great luck with sprinkling in Tiny amounts at a time while the mix is still really hot, just after straining.
