Maybe you can apply the gel to sections of your hair. When I apply gel, I section into four parts, and apply product to each section. Then at the end, I lightly run the shower over my hair for a few seconds to make sure that each strand is saturated. My hair type is different, but you don't have to do 4 sections. You can maybe do two, and apply a quarter size to both sides(or adjust it based on how it feels). Sectioning may help you out a bit. It really depends on how thick your hair is, and how easily weighed down it can get when applying gel.
