Hair not curly when dry

Hey ladies,

I'm ever so confused... I THINK I am 3a- 3b, but what does it mean when ,my hair isnt even all that curly when it's got nothing in it. I mean, when my hair has absolutely NOTHING in it and I let it dry...it's mostly just FRIZZ, big, poofy, dry frizz. I have curls in the dark underneath but even then it's no where near as curly as what it is when I have product in it? My hair is between the bottom of my shoulder blade and bra length. Does anyone else get this or do you all dry curly?

Most of us use a variety of products/techniques to define, moisturize, tighten and keep our curls throughout the day.

It's likely that the weight of your hair is pulling the curl out, especially when it is heavy with water. That's why a lot of us do things that set the curl and remove the water as quickly as possible--plopping, diffusing, scrunching out water with a curl towel, etc.

If I let my hair dry without product and without diffusing, it's pretty straight and frizzy...it separates and doesn't hold together at all. It's nasty.

But with the right products and when I diffuse dry it, it's a whole different story. I have great curl and lots of clumping ringlets.
3a/b, fine hair (just lots of it!), average porosity, high elasticity, fragile curls

No Poo and loving it! Gave up my hair dryer and never looked back!

oh ok,thanks for the replies. So it's just a matter of finding the right products then...and techniques. That's a job in it's own but atleast now I know it's normal for my hair to go FRIZZY BANG without product.

The other thing you need for great hair is a good haircut. It's the foundation for everything. If your hair isn't cut right, it will be VERY difficult for it to look incredible.

My dry, naked hair has very little curl definition. Especially the canopy. It's just a big, frizzy poof. I think this is very normal for a lot of curlies!
Hair type: Mostly 3C, medium porosity to high porosity depending on the day, dense, fluffy, dry, tangly!

Mine most depends on the weather - which drastically changes (when living in super-dry colorado i had much much less curl compared now to south china tropics), but I all agree that product is important. See the thread "conditioner as gel or cream?" b/c now that i don't have access to products, i only use conditioner-just lots of it as leave-in, & i still have ok hair. For sure try that method, but add product too for even better results (CG products, of course!).

Can you post pics? We'd love to see what you're talking about!

-Mostly 3A, though wavy if not enough moisture (like when I lived in CO.).
-High dew point gives large ringlets, though smaller & tighter coils at neck.
-Med. texture, high density, normally porous?
-sulfate free, silicone free baby!
-searching for good stylers (but can't purchase living in China! must wait till summers to buy in US)
exact same thing for me : when nothing in it just a frizzy/pooffy and nearly straight mess !
Same here, my hair is straight all the way to my ears if i just let it dry without doing anything to it...and I hate that! It might have to do with what kind of climate you are in. This past winter has been brutal to my hair, and it's now practically straight! But, I very recently tried out an experiment:

I've recently been using a vaporizer in my house since the air has been so dry. One day, I decided to see what effect it would have on my hair. So, looking like a doofus, I flipped my hair over the steam, and just steamed my hair for a good while. When I was done, and my hair dried, it curled again! And had it's volume back!

So I mean hey, give this a try? I know it sounds crazy, but it helped a bit. Just don't burn yourself!
