Super dry hair but I love shampoo :/ help!

Ok so here's the deal:
I have dry, porous, thick, 3a, frizzy hair. I was cg for a couple of months, but I just stopped because my hair started feeling weird. My hair looked very healthy, but when I got in the shower it felt gunky and not very smooth. So I went back to shampoo. It makes my hair feel great in the shower ( and I like using cones) but my hair has gotten a lot drier. So what should I do?

Should I keep shampooing and use more moisturizing conditioners? if so which ones, preferably drugstore

Should I use a low poo and cut out most cones? If so which ones?

Do you have any other thoughts?

Thanks!

My current favorites: Suave naturals shampoo, Suave coconut, Organix argan and moroccan oil conditioner, GFTN, LALMG, FSG <3!!

Not a huge fan of CG :/

Hey there! I love shampoo too, so you're not alone. What I do (and suggest you try) is using a low-poo that doesn't contain any sulfates or silicones, and condition with a CG-friendly conditioner. Since your hair is very porous, make sure the conditioner loads up on the moisture, and try using a leave-in as well!

The most important thing, imo, is that you cut out sulfates, as those are a big source of dryness and frizz. I don't know where you live, but if you just read the backs of shampoos in your local drugstore, you'll probably find at least one that doesn't have a sulfate (like sodium laureth sulfate) in it. Conditioners without silicones (things ending in -cone or -xane) should probably be a little easier to find. There are a lot of suggestions for moisture-heavy and CG-friendly conditioners around the forums, and you can try any of them. If you don't mind a water-soluble cone, the ones with PEG in front are okay.

That's basically what I do--root around in the drugstore until I find something that fits my criteria. Since your hair is dry, try deep-conditioning regularly too!
- 2b/3a? med-fine (texture), low/med (porosity), low (elasticity)
- short hair. my curl is mostly at the ends and in front, and I love the way it frames my face!
- I don't use dyes or heat.
- non-US.

Lowpoo: Naked Shine / Detox / Volume
Cond: Live Clean Purple Jewel
Stylers: Boots Curl Creme
Experimenting with LaCoupe Curl Contouring Creme, SH Thickening Mist, and Jessicurl products for fine hair.
My experience isn't typical of most of the curl friends on this board, but I haven't been all that happy with the lo poos. I find that there are a few sulfate shampoos that seem to me gentler than the low poos.

The two that I like are L'oreal Vive Pro Color Vive Hi Gloss Shampoo (my hair is color treated, so really dry and a little damaged) and my favorite is Curlisto BioCurl Shampoo. It is very hydrating and I would use it all the time but it is expensive.

So usually once a week I use one of those. I am careful to use a really good deep conditioner (Curl Junkie Curl Rehab) and a great conditioner (Mop Top Daily Lemon Sage Conditioner or L'oreal Smooth Silky Conditioner). The L'oreal Smooth Silky conditioner was rated #1 out of all the conditioners in the Conditioner Chronicles which you can find here on this board. (If you can't find it send me a pm and I'll guide you to it.)

In sum, I tried going straight CG which didn't work for me and sometimes I try for a few weeks to just use lo poos, but my hair seems to do better with a very gentle sulfate shampoo. I dunno! Please post back and tell us what your experience is as you experiment.

Thanks for the replies! I'm finding that i like suave naturals shampoo and i use it like every three days.

I totally agree with curlypearl about the low poos.. they make my hair feel squeaky or something. I just dont like the end result.

Thanks!

Have you tried using cleansing conditioners -- something like Curl Junkie Daily Fix (or VO5 cleansing conditioners, or Suave conditioners...for cheaper options )? Sulfate shampoos can feel nice at first, but they really can dry the heck out of your hair with regular usage. If you really want to keep using shampoo, you should try diluting a little of your favorite sulfate shampoo in water. Just mix the shampoo and water in an empty bottle, and use it like regular shampoo. It lessens the stripping effects a lot and kinda makes it like a low poo. That way, it would be a lot better and gentler to your hair.

i love to use aveeno's moisture+nourish shampoo and conditioner. my hair feels so soft and healthy afterwards! however the shampoo does have a sulfate and they both have one or two silicones....not sure if they're damaging to curly hair or not tho

Im on day 1 of 100 days of CG, so I really can't say if it's working for me or not (todays results were pretty good, and its only day 1, though!). BUT, I have this shampoo that is sulfate free that I bought before CG because of the smell. Its Organix Coconut Milk. Available at drug stores, etc. Come to find out I can use it w/ CG as a low-poo if/when needed- so that's good! But you might like it. Especially if your hair responds well to proteins (I think there is egg protein in there).

Its funny, because before I dove into this world of sulfates, cones, etc. I had no clue why it didn't seem to "work" as well as my Sebastian shampoo. (It works, it just doesn't foam as much). And its because there aren't any sulfates! haha!

I would also suggest deep conditioning at least once a week. With a really good deep conditioner. Put a shower cap over your hair and hit it for a few mins with the blow dryer to heat it up and help your hair absorb it. But make sure your hair is clean from crap, or else it won't really work that well!

I think if your hair looks great and is healthy on CG, but it just doesn't feel like it used to in the shower...Im not sure its worth that trade! Maybe you need more moisture? Or more protein? Or maybe you just need a longer experimental time to figure out what works for you? Good luck whatever you decide!
