Default how much protein do you use?

I'm trying to figure out the best moisture/ protein balance for my routine.

Which of your products have protein and how often do you use them?

You just have to play around with using protein to find what works for your hair. I never thought I needed protein because I have medium texture, normal porosity, and haven't heat styled or did a chemical treatment in years. But I used a lot of protein for the last month and my hair looks much better than before.

Almost all my products currently have protein in them except for the stylers so I use protein almost daily. I do a hard PT once a week. My RO is protein heavy. My shampoo, co-wash, and LI also have some protein.

Products
Giovanni - almost all their products have soy protein

DermOrganic Intensive Mask - great protein RO but kinda pricey for a RO and smells medicinal. I plan to buy AO GPB conditioner instead when I run out of this one.

My favorite is Colorful Neutral Protein Filler. It's a liquid and very multi-purpose. You can add it to almost any product to give it a protein boost. I use it slightly diluted as a hard PT once a week.

If you want other product ideas, you should check out the protein craving board. The ladies there know of lots of options.

thanks! that's really helpful. I just recovered from a protein overload. my hair is pretty ok in the moisture department but has lost a lot of its curl. i have seen a small improvement in the past three days because I have returned to using ecostyler and other protein products, but I am scared that I will overdo it again.

My hair also loves protein. Mane & Tail has protein in it, and I cowash with that. I also added some silk amino acids to my Garnier Sleek n Shine, and I think that's a protein. I use that as my leave in.

How about alternating your RO? One with protein and one moisturizing. That should perk up your curls regularly but still balance it out with the moisture.

Awesome... I was so scared to not follow up with a DT but my hair felt way better without one so I guess tomorrow I'll be trying that! That treatment sounds good too wish I knew where a Sally's was lol

I use the Palmers Coconut Protein Pack DT once a week and my hair loves it, however if I use protein too much my hair starts to get that poofy/fluffy look

When I was using my store bought PT (Soft-N-Free Olive oil & milk protein), I NEVER followed up w/a DT & my hair was absolutely fine.

However now that I started making my own (egg yolks, mayo & evoo) I don't take that risk. I do my PT as a pre-poo on dry hair, rinse w/cold water, wash w/SM shampoo, detangle w/SM condish & coconut oil, add a little more coconut oil to my entire head, sit under the dryer for 45mins, rinse & style. My hair was soft & manageable afterwards.

Now I've only done this once since I only do PT once a month, so don't take my word as gospel. Lol. I am however doing another homemade PT on Sunday so I will report bk w/the results I get.
