My healthy hair journey

Hi all,
I am hoping this is the right place to start a "blog" about my journey toward acceptance of my hair. I'm 24 years old and I've fought my hair my whole life. I'd always get optimistic about trying something that would finally make me feel okay about my hair, only to be disappointed and end up pulling it back every time.
Here I want to post lots of pictures as my hair becomes healthier and I learn how to manage it. I am trying to grow it out by at least 5 inches but have made a lot of past mistakes that are preventing this from happening. In the meantime, if you want to throw in tidbits about how to accept this wild and crazy hair, please do!!! So to get it started, here's where I'm at right now...

Today I tried using all of my Shea Moisture line. I love this line. I'm afraid the protein in the Coconut & Hibiscus products will irritate my hair, and so far this is proving to be true, I'm feeling some of the "protein stiffness." So I can't keep up with this routine.
I used the Coconut & Hibiscus shampoo (which I LOVE), I drenched my hair with the curling milk as I did the Icequeen method, then rinsed that out upside down. I then applied the Curl Enhancing Smoothie and topped that with a !TINY! amount of KCCC.
(click for larger) I have never had this much shine before!

So today my hair is appearing healthy, but under healthy circumstances my hair is really MUCH curlier than this. I have damaged it so badly with coloring (and even a bleaching once! ) that it is not curling as it should.

I just picked up the Shea Moisture repair & transition kit. Looking forward to trying it since these products don't have protein.
Very coarse, thick, porous 3B. My biggest challenge is SOFTNESS and SHINE.

Current shampoo: Biosilk w/ added vitamin E
Current conditioner: Lush Okra
Leave-ins: Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, KCCC
CG didn't work for me. Oils don't work for me. Trying hard to learn how to love my hair. Read my blog.
woow considering you say you have quiet a bit of damage, it looks great! so wat your dong is working for you have you thought of doing a hot oil treatment? it will help with your damage

my hair: 3c, high porosity, high density and coarse hair (i think i finally figured that all out)
my hair loves conditioner only styling!
my hair goal length is bra strap length when curly.

Thanks! Actually my hair doesn't really like oil, so idk if that would be a good idea. I'm having some trouble with it today. I think when I took these pics it was a case of the "first time trying product" syndrome.... gives amazing results the first time I try them, then I can't duplicate them! I seem to get that a lot lol

So even though I'm only using Shea Moisture products right now to try to be consistent, I'm not seeing the results I want. I just ordered Original Moxie Hair Bling since my hair can never hold shine. I'll post more pictures as I try it!

well to help with your shine, there are a few herbs that will help. marshmallow root gives great shine, gives amazing slip and helps with scalp problems. stinging nettle is meant to help with shine, i just got nettle water today will use it after my shower, so see how that goes.
give your hair a blast with cold water when ya done with everything, this closes the hair and gives shine and helps with fizz

I think faithfully keeping a hair diary (or blog in this case) is really beneficial in helping to figure your hair out. I'm still relatively new to allowing my hair to be its naturally curly self 100% of the time, and the hair diary I've been keeping daily for a over two months now, has helped a lot with zeroing in on what products and routines are working and which ones aren't. Hope your blog helps you, too.

In the meantime, I'm curious if you're still using SheaMoisture. I ask because you said your hair is coarse. Everyone's hair is different, of course, but many curlies with coarse hair can't tolerate even small amounts of protein. If that's the case, the sea kelp (protein) in some of the SheaMoisture could really be doing a number on your hair.

Reading labels on all products is another thing you may have to do to really learn what works and what doesn't. Again, keeping track of this product ingredients in something like your blog will help the learning curve on know more about ingredients your hair loves and ones you have to avoid completely. Btw, I regularly check the Product Reviews section here on nc.com because if a product I want info on is listed there, then a lot of the work has already been done for me. I can easily just check the ingredient properties I most want to keep track of -- sulfate-free, silicone-free, protein-free (except for silk proteins which my hair does just fine with), glycerine-free. Doing this helped me learn that my hair can't take some proteins but likes others.

Another thought -- I see you said your hair doesn't like oils. Which ones have your tried? Your hair may respond really well with some oils but not with others. My hair does great with coconut oil and also does well with EVOO. I've tried jojoba oil, my hair only did so-so with it, so I don't use it anymore.

Anyway, I wish you luck with learning the proper care for *your* specific hair. Your hair actually looks pretty good in the pics you've posted here. There's obviously lots of potential there!
