Advice on how to better use Jessicurl Confident Coils (pics)

Hi everyone,

It would be great if some fellow 3As or close with similar hair properties could give me advice on what to add to my hair routine to eliminate the frizz. I will go into detail here and post some pics so you have a good idea of what I'm doing. And my signature has all my hair properties!

Tonight I used DevaCurl No-Poo (I suspected my hair had been bogged down with protein but otherwise I normally just co-wash), followed by DevaCurl One Conditioner, then in the shower soaking wet I evenly applied a quarter-size of Beautiful Curls Leave-in Conditioner, combed it through with a thick comb, parted my hair, then applied a quarter-size+ of JCCC. Out of the shower, I scrunched with my hands to try to clump a bit, twisted a few curls on my super-frizzy crown, and then lightly scrunched with a t-shirt to remove some of the water before running out to a movie with wet hair (I was in the car at least and then inside at the movie). When the movie was over and my hair was 95% dry, I fluffed my hair and went on my way. It was a really foggy night, with 100% humidity. The dew points were probably in the high sixties to low fifties as it got cooler later on.

I was really happy with my hair at the theater, and it felt soft, but after being outside in the fog this is what my hair looked like (click on thumbnails for bigger size):

Basically I like the curl definition but I would love to cut out some of the frizz. I'm thinking I might need a light gel over the CC? I need a gluten-free product so it would have to be a gel without wheat.

I'm also in the market for a good regular conditioner that will work well for me. Until I find one I want to buy, I have borrowed DevaCurl One from my mom. It makes my medium-coarse hair feel soft when wet. I was using Burt's Bees Pomegranate Soy Conditioner and my hair felt coarse in the shower and was tangling a bit which is rare for me. I'm assuming the soy amino acids (protein) is what was killing my hair but I'm not sure.

In terms of styling products, I have also tried DevaCurl Set It Free on soaking wet hair but so far I prefer CC. I will have to try SIF after the Curls leave-in conditioner to see if that makes a difference.

In general, I like products with minimal "junk" in them. I'd be curious about the Aubrey brand, or another organicky brand.

Any thoughts/ideas? What works for you?

Thanks so much in advance!

My hair prefers the more natural products from the online, boutique type companies. The only AO products I use on occasion are the AOMM or B-5 gels (I consider them jellies because they don't have all the chemicals in them) and the GPB conditioner. I could live without all of them--they aren't at the top of any of my lists.

Most of us start out with the Deva products, think we like them and then more on to other lines. When the NoPoo changed ingredients several years ago, I found it very drying. The salon I go to has Deva--I won't let them use it on my hair. I bring CJ Daily Fix instead. I try to use that a time or two between my every six week salon visits for it's chelating propety.

Many of us rotate products. I seldom use any one product more then twice a week. You may also need to change things up based on the dewpoint. You may not want to use JCCC all of the time, it contains magnesium sulfate. An ingredient that many find drying.

Thanks, Kathy, for the suggestion to use CJ Daily Fix. What are your other fave CJ products? I prefer soft curls (with a little frizz) than crunchy.

Does anyone else want to chime in about what they use with JCCC? I might try to make FSG at home instead of buying RR.

I had similar frizz issues until I started plopping with an old t-shirt.

I am also using Deva OC for co-wash, condish and LI, I had tried SIF but found that while it gave me GREAT curl def and frizz control, it flaked in my hair. Surprisingly, I found that after trying CJ CCCC Lite it flaked even WORSE than SIF (like a hailstorm of dandruff raining down on my shoulders - yuk!). I'm now back to just Angel and that is working just fine, but the key for me was a plop rather than scrunch dry.

I apply the LI and gel in the shower to soaking wet hair, and use my hands to just scrunch out a bit of excess water, although my hair is still soaked when I step out and plop with a t-shirt. I had plopped originally with a MF towel and got tons of frizz, Kathymac suggested a t-shirt and it worked great.

I only leave the plop in for about 5 mins while I finish up drying off in the bathroom - my hair is still quite short (growing out a pixie) so if I plop for much longer I get weird bends in my hair.

Then clip, air dry or diffuse and on my way with no frizz. I do find that if I touch my hair too much or SOTC too early (i.e. hair is not completely dry) I get more frizz than if I let it get COMPLETELY dry first.

HTH.

Debbah: Are you saying that SIF flaked when you put it on after One as a LI with nothing else? Strange! I didn't have that problem. But I also did't use One as a LI. I'm in the market for a different conditioner to mix things up...let me know if you try any others.

I need to perfect my plopping technique - thanks for the advice on that. I agree that MF towel---it feels rough to the touch which was the giveaway for me---is not great for frizz and so I just use a soft tee. I find it tricky to roll up the sides of the shirt without moving my hair around and I also don't like what plopping does to the pieces right at my forehead line. I'm still figuring it out.

I think the other key might be to use a gel over CC for more hold and less frizzies. I'll experiment with FSG this week bc Angel has wheat in it, an ingredient I avoid.

I've yet to try any CJ prods...would be curious to see how they work for me.

Let me know if you have any other tips as you continue to experiment! Oh, and what do you do for 2nd-day hair?

It never ends....

Hi coricourt -

SIF flaked both when I used OC as a LI and when I didn't use any LI at all (just RO the OC). I tried varying number of pumps (from 2-4), and still got flakes. I always topped SIF with Angel, but Angel by itself doesn't flake on my so I figured the only variable was SIF. Too bad too because my curls love it. I will still sometimes use it (but only 2 pumps) on rainy days when I know I need an extra boost and then just deal with the few flakes. I'm still searching for the HG for curl def - CCCC Lite flaked out on me (literally) so I think I will next try KCCC and GFC.

I was also looking for another condish and tried CJ Beauticurls Strengthening and it did NOT work for me - my hair turned to mush. I think I am learning that I may be slightly protein sensitive. The more I try to move away from Deva products the more I come back to them as they are the only products that have worked consistently well for me (other than SIF).

One thing to think about with your plop is the size of the t-shirt. I used one of hubby's old 3XL t-shirts, and it's big enough for the twists to wrap around the back of my head and for me to tie them together. Works really well. You may just want to go buy a cheap Jockey mens 3XL shirt to use.

For 2nd day hair when I get up I flip over and spritz with Mister Right and shake everything out, then flip back up and spritz and LIGHTLY scrunch on the canopy. Go about my morning and let it air dry, then right before I leave the house I will usually lightly scrunch in some Aveda Humectant Pomade. Works really well for me pretty consistently.

Good luck, and I just wish for the day when I don't have the think about/experiment with my hair so much!

Just wanted to update with more photos. Look at the difference! I've now been CG for 2 months and I'm mostly using KCKT + KCCC.

However, today I used the following:
1) DevaCurl No Poo (I had done a jojoba oil and rosemary EO + teatree EO scalp treatment last night but normally i just co-wash)
2) Jessicurl Too Shea Conditioner
3) In shower with soaking wet hair: Alaffia Beauticurls Shea Leave-in, then Jessicurl Rockin' Ringlets, then Jessicurl Confident Coils
4) I would've supersoaked (sans denman) but I didn't have time.
5) 15-min plop
6) Clipped roots
7) When dry, fluffed (there wasn't much crunch to scrunch out).

I'm leaning over and the way my curls fall make me look like a conehead!

I think the trick is to use RR and CC together (like I did in these pics), otherwise to put a little bit of a stronger hold gel on top (which I've not yet tried).
