Default When you went 100% curly/natural did you just fall in love with your natural hair?

I personally did! I've had a relaxer since I was about 6 years old (I'm now 35) so I never knew my hair could be this thick, healthy, & curly. Over the many years of relaxing, my hair became so thin & seemed to stop growing. It would wave up to wear wet look styles when relaxed but took a lot of work to do so. Truthfully, I never really knew my hair would curl this way being that new growth when time to renew my relaxers was so coarse & dry.

Transitioning didn't really allow me to truly enjoy my natural hair but once I BC'd I instantly fell in love with my hair like never before. I've always had long hair so to have my hair this short & I still love it is a huge transformation for me. I'm so in love with how thick my hair is & am enjoying my curls so much that I'm not ever tempted to straighten it. This from the girl who loved & lived by relaxers & having super straight, "long", hair! I am truly inspired by all these beautiful curls I have seen in this forum. Gives me lots to look forward too as my curls grow out as well as all of the tips to care for my hair.

What has been your experience?

yeah i was pretty much the same as you. I've been getting relaxers since I was 12 years old..i'm 27 now. I always loved having my hair relaxed...i wanted to do it all the time. but as i got older and tired of blow drying my hair every week..when i tried to wear my hair "curly" it was just not co-operating and when I went a long time between relaxers, I realized my new growth was "kinky" but also soft and curly. I tried going "natural" several times before but I never had the correct information and always ended up giving in to the "creamy crack" lol. At 25 I got married and I decided..this is it. I'm going to relax my hair for my wedding and this will be the last relaxer on my hair. That was in Sept of 2009...I stopped relaxing but I was still straightening because I didn't know what to do with my hair and now it was half curly and half straight...and I refused to do a "big cut". In May of 2011..a year and half after I stopped relaxing, I discovered the Deva cut and decided..screw this..I'm cutting it all off...like u said..INSTANTLY LOVED MY HAIR. because all that was left was my natural virgin hair, which was soft and healthy and actually CURLY, not that weird wave relaxed hair does. I will NEVER go back to relaxing and i'm even skeptical to blow dry my hair now. I love my curls and i'm never looking back.

I love it! Thank you for sharing!

Yes, I can't agree more... I'm afraid of flat ironing, or blow drying because I don't want to alter my curl pattern or cause any breakage. I too will never go back to a relaxer.

My hair is in an awkward in between stage & I'm not yet used to my curly Afro but I still love my curls. So, I wear my curls out around the house but put it in a puff. I can't wait until it grows out longer!

No.
Once I stopped relaxing and did the big chop (I had about 4-5 inches of new hair growth), I really didn't like my just-discovered 3C/4A kinks.

Truth be told, I felt like my curls and I were in an arranged marriage and I simply had to learn to live with it.

However... as the curls grew and I experimented with different products and techniques, I realized how truly beautiful my hair is. My curls grew shiny, bouncy, healthy and after many months, well... love emerged.

I continue experimenting and can't imagine ever going back to the relaxers!

@KurleeEdna

Thank you for sharing! You should post some pics!

I understand... There were some times while I was transitioning that I felt stuck & was not enjoying my hair at all. But, now I will not ever go back to chemicals/relaxers on my hair.

Thank God we found love with our curly hair! Lol!

Personally, my hair irritates me on a daily basis. I love curly hair but my hair never seems to cooperate and look the way I want it to look. But everyone else seems to adore my hair..

Yes I did. I haven't used a relaxer in over 10 years.I didn't do an intensional BC. I was in high school and going through a "finding myself" phase and cut off all of my bsl relaxed hair. It was REALLY short, I'm talking tapered with clippers. After going a couple of weeks without a touch up I started to notice my hair was curly. But It wasn't until I went completely natural and stopped dying my hair that I realized how healthy is can be. I am currently participating in a waist length growth challenge. Thanks for sharing your story. It's always good to hear about people finding something new about themselves to love!

@Britney

Hi Britney... I literally just told my cousin yesterday that I think other people usually have a better perception of your hair than you do. Lol! We have in mind what we want it to look like, it doesn't but other gush about it.

After having straight hair for so many year I have a great appreciation for my curls even when they wierd out on me. Lol!

I think your hair is beautiful! Thanks for sharing!

OMG! I love your hair... It's beautiful! Thank you for posting the pic!

Thank you for sharing your hair journey. I had been thinking about coloring is highlighting my hair for a ling time but too scared of the damage. When OMG hair was relaxed whenever I lightened or got highlights my hair would be so dry & brittle. My goal on this journey is tailbone length, healthy, shiny, thick hair!

I wish you the best in your growth challenge!

I was deathly afraid and it wasn't really a big chop. The picture on my profile is the first cut. I was terrified of how short it was, not that my hair was that long to begin with and I insisted that I was bald lol. Well the first look on facebook(of course) everybody loved it! and I have not looked back since.

I liked it because it was new but I hated it because it was too new. I think it took me about 2 years before I really started liking it.

Thanks for sharing...

2 years is a long time. I do however, get what you are saying about being new in both aspects. Although, I'm in love with my thick, curly hair I'm now in a wierd state with mine because of length & learning my curls. I'm currently doing the CG method to help with the frizz & dryness. Learning to love & accept my hair in every state.

I really didn't like my 3C/4A curls until I learned how to define them, now I love them! My only problem now is that my hair is in the weird stage where its too short for cute longer hairstyles and too long for the cute short hairstyles

@naturalbabydoll

I understand, I'm in that same place with my hair. My Afro puff no longer looks right. The styles I would like are for longer curls.

So, I'm on a hunt for cute short styles that fit me!

I'm on a quest for cute short hairstyles as well. I seen a few cute ones in a Youtube video but I haven't attempted any. I need to add some accessories or something. I'm looking into a salon I heard about in my area on here. I hear the girl does wonders making your hair look right at any stage!
