Help With Clumping

So I have newly started CG, but my hair will not clump. I co-wash, then condition the length of my hair. After this I rinse out a tiny bit, and apply KCKT. After this I have been experimenting with a mixture of products. Generally, I apply DevaCurl Frizz-Free Volumizing Foam, then L.A. Looks Sport Gel or DevaCurl Spray Gel. Recently, I have been adding KCCC after KCNT for a looser look. However, I cannot get my hair to clump. I think I may need to moisturize my hair more, but I really have no idea what to do to get my hair to clump. I would appreciate any help. Thank You.
It would be good to know your hair properties, they are really more important then curl type when it comes to ingredients/products. Here's a link to help: Live Curly Live Free - Home Once you determine your properties, look for people with hair like yours and see what they use (in signatures) and do (look for posts they've made about techniques.) Since coming on nc.com and learning to use products and techniques, I've managed to maximize my curls. I started out winter wavy/summer 3a. Now my hair looks like my signature picture all year around. It's all about getting the protein/moisture balance correct.

Many of us start out with Deva products, think we like them and then move on to other products. My hair prefers the more natural products from the online, boutique type companies.

BTW, you may be right about moisture. I know that KCKT just didn't have enough moisture for my hair.

Good advice!

You might try more LI, and keeping your hair more wet, and then scrunch in some gel to try to create the clumps. If you need more hold, add more gel, or a different harder hold gel or mouse.

Definitely try a heavier RO, too.

When my hair gets dry, it will not clump, at all. So you may find that improves as your hair's condition improves!

After washing my hair and using both the icequeen method and super-soaking, then plopping, I had great clumps. However, when I flipped (gently) my head over, I lost a lot of the clumps. To me this sounds like a gel problem. Does that sound right? I used LALSG, but maybe I should try more? I feel like I used a lot.

How long is your hair?? Do you have a haircut with "good" layering, so the length isn't pulling out the curl?? My hair is too short to plop, I don't supersoak and I use jelly type products and not gels (no chemicals for hold, etc.)

Other then using the right products so you get the right moisture/protein balance (which I feel is really important), I'd suggest diffusing upside down to "set" the curls. I wet, use a rinse out and style every day. I put my products in soaking wet hair and wrap in a Curlease towel while I dress and apply makeup. When I'm ready to dry, I scrunch my hair with a CLU cloth upside down and right side up. Then, I diffuse--mostly upside down, until my products "set." I air dry the rest of the way. Because my hair is low porosity, that can take several hours. I don't touch my hair until it's completely dry. I go in from the underneath to check--and gently SOTC with bare hands.

A lot of people (me included) have found that the upside down thing doesn't work for clumping. Others love it. There are a couple threads debating, actually!

I found that if I lean forward but not flip it all the way over I can achieve better clumps.

Just food for thought!

I haven't been on here in months. Hi Kathymack

But for me, moisture is the key to clumps. In fact, with too much I end up with clumps that overtake my head.

diffusing upside down, upside right .. it's all the same -- for me at least.

Scrunching in your product and finding the right products for your hair (as km mentioned) is key to the best curl you can achieve.

For me, right product = protein and something with light-medium hold. Curl Keeper in summer and any CJ gel/gelee in winter.
