To answer your question, no you don't need to protective style your hair in order for it to grow. But it does help if you don't feel like styling your hair for a while. Like myself, I just braided my hair (with extensions) because I didn't feel like doing my hair for a while. Nonetheless shrinkage occurs normally, its not a much on stretched hair. Hope this helps
