Need product recommendations for dry climate!

Hello!

I'm relatively new to the CG method, and I'm looking for some product recommendations to help out with frizz and curl definition.

I guess to start, I should share some about my hair and what I've tried so far. I am 2c/3a (I think), with medium-fine, fairly dense hair. Normally, I would say my hair's porosity is normal, although I have colored it twice in the last 6 months (the last time was about 4 months ago - I initially went a much darker red/brown, then added in a bunch of blood highlights so that I could try to transition back to my normal strawberry blonde). My hair tends to be courser and frizzier in the back of my head, which for some reason I have a hard time getting at when I'm putting in my products.

I've been CG now for about 3 months; I co-wash every 2-3 days, and then shampoo with a sulfate free poo once a week to get a good cleanse before I do a DT (right now I'm using Tressemme Naturals Moisture Nourishing condish and add in EVOO, honey and vitamin e for my DT, and let that sit for about an hour under a shower cap). For co-wash, I've been using L'Oreal Everceme Cleansing Coditioner or CJ Daily Fix, and for shampoo I've use L'Oreal Everceme Intense Moisture sulfate-free shampoo or KC Come Clean. For RO I use the Tressemme Naturals, and for LI I use either L'Oreal Evercreme or KCKT. For styling I've been alternating between DB Curl Styling LI Creme, DB Curling Cream Gel, and CF Pure Clean gel.

I live in Colorado, so it is very dry here. I've been trying to add in more moisture, but avoiding glycerin and humectants as the dew point here is very low (I also do not use any silicones). I really like using curl creams underneath gel (LI and gel alone don't seem to moisturize enough) but I feel like whenever I find something that moisturizes well and cuts the frizz, it leaves my curls weighed down and looser/limper than I like. I'm wondering what products you all have found that work well to moisturize and encourage curls in dry climates.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Oh, and here are some pics for you all to see.

fine, dense, normal porosity/elasticity, dry climate

My favorite brands are Kinky Curly, As I am, Curly Kinks, Curl Junkie, and Darcy's Botanicals. Also love sealing with oils (loving argan oil right now) and styling with jelly products (KCCC is my current favorite). Mostly trying to keep it simple!

I'm not from a dry climate, but have been doing research for my trip (hopefully) to Montana in June.

Drugstore buys that I have found that have a lot of moisture are the Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Line. Since summer is pretty much here in Alabama, I can't use much of these products right now because they have too much moisture for me. They run at 9.99 each here. If you have a Sally's Beauty Supply, the Biotera Firm Hold Gel might be more moisturizing for you. It's not that much either. LA Looks Nutra Curl is protein free (I think) and has avacoda in it, which is moisturizing for the hair. I've only used Nutra Curl once, and I can't remember what I used it with, but it didn't turn out well. I think I over moisturized. HTH!

I've been wanting to try the Shea Moisture line - they sell it at my local Target, but every time I've been in to get it, they're sold out of the items I want (may have to break down and order it online - ugh). I haven't heard of the LA Looks Nutri Curl - did you find it at a local drugstore? I'm trying to locate items on the ground that I won't have to order.

Any thoughts on the DevaCurl line? My stylist used the low-poo and One C at my last haircut, and I really liked it, so I ordered a bottle of the One C for home; I just received it, and I REALLY hate the smell (strong lemon pledge scent). I don't remember it smelling this bad at the salon, and the smell doesn't seem to linger too much on my hair, but in the shower it is overpowering (my hubby even told me that he opened the bottle to use some, took one whiff, and put it back - haha!). I haven't been using it long enough to tell if it's making a difference to my hair's condition, but it doesn't seem to be working any better than the Tressemme Naturals.

I've also been thinking about trying the V05 Moisture Milks or the Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut, but I think they both have proteins, and I'm a little leery of how my hair will react. Even though I've colored my hair, and think it may be medium to high porosity, I've had not good luck with protein in the past. But maybe its the type of protein? What I used before was the Organix Nourishing Coconut Milk line, which has silk amino complex, coconut milk and egg white protein - it made my hair feel like straw. It also contains glycerin, which I thought might be an issue since it's so dry here, but some of my other products have glycerin in them and I don't seem to have any issue with them (although, it is vegetable glycerin, so maybe that's the difference).

The She Moisture line does have vegetable glycerin in it. As for One C, I haven't tried it. I do have the Curl Creme, B'Leave In, and ArcAngel. They all have protein in them as well and they do ok on my hair. I'm not really impressed, but have only used them a few times.

LA Looks Nutra Curl can be found at drugstores. It's not very expensive.

My hair likes protein, so I don't worry about it. But I have noticed other people around the site who can't use protein. Aussie Instant Freeze is protein and glycerin free. Someone told me once on a post that if glycerin is high on the ingredients list it can cause problems. If glycerin is further down the list then normally it's ok.

Protein free Sauve Naturals are: Everlasting Sunshine, Mango Mandarine, Daily Clarifying, Waterfall Mist, Ocean Breeze (It does have Algae in it.), Sun-Ripened Strawberry, Wild Cherry Blossom, Juicy Green Apple, Aloe and Water Lily, Pomegranate Splash, and Soothing Lavendar Lilac. I would still check labels when you buy products though, just in case.

Thanks for the info - I think I'll try one of the suave naturals and see if I can find the nutra curl gel - and maybe SM if I can locate it on the ground.

Hi I also live in CO
Can't offer much help either as I am on the same quest to find a good moisture product. I did buy the moisture conditioner from Trader Joes that I read about here, and I liked for a while but then it seemed as it would just sit on hair??? If you discover anything let me know

I'm still trying to figure how my hair responds to certain ingredients (its so hard to get consistent and "scientific" results!) But here's what I've discovered so far:

KCKT - not enough moisture for me as a LI or detangler - okay to smooth frizz on day 2 hair, but that's about it.

DevaCurl: OneC moisturizes well, but hate the styling products. Don't know if its the high glycerin content, or all the protein, or both, but it left my hair feeling fry, sticky/crunchy, frizzy and producty.

AG Recoil: verdict still out. Gave good curl definition, but my hair was dry and frizzy. Could have been that I did not use moisturize enough, or used too much product. I'll keep experimenting.

Oyin Hair Dew: like it so far. Only used it once, with SS CEJ and Ouidad CC gel - no frizz and tons of moisture (maybe too much), so my curls were a little more limp. Will experiment using this with Recoil to see if I can get a good balance of curl enhancement and moisture.

SheaMoisture: just tried the moisture retention shampoo, restorative condish/DT, and curl & shine milk. Styled with JC RR and Curls goddess curls gel. Results were okay - not super moisturizing, but not as bad as the DevaCurl stylers or my first attempt with recoil. I know there are still proteins and glycerin in these products, so maybe that is the issue. But they are lower down on the ingredient list, so maybe that's why it wasn't as bad.

The pics below are with SS CEJ - this seems to really help with frizz, but not much hold by itself. I also have CurlKeeper to try. I seem to do nest with little or no glycerin (hard to find since most frizz fighting products seem to contain them). I'm still trying to figure out if certain types of protein work better for me than others - seem to be okay with silk and soy if they are not too high on the list. I will keep experimenting and let you know the results!

Another Colorado curly !!

My favorite producs are in my siggy. I haven't found that I'm sensitive to any products. I've been (surprisingly) having great results with curl keeper. I LOVE curlykinks satin roots leave in and tresseme naturals as a leave in. Also love DB pumpkin conditioner and GVP conditioning balm.

Hi! I'm looking forward to trying the curl keeper - do you use it by itself or do you pair it with certain products?

I also like the tresemme naturals. I usually use it as a RO, or add stuff to it to make a DT. I tried it as a LI but didn't seem to be quite as moisturizing as I like (although better than the KCKT). But maybe paired with the SS CEJ or the Curl Keeper I would get better results. I have also used Loreal evercreme condish as a LI and liked that pretty well. I seem be having a hard time finding the right amount is moisture and hold together.

I'm going to try keeping things a little more simple - maybe try the Oyin hair dew as a LI and the curl keeper alone and see how that works. Will post pics

Trying to keep it simple. One other thing that I love and do every time I style, is sealing. After my leave in, I seal with either coconut oil, EVOO or EO's serum (mixture of oils). Then I add my styler. This makes a huge difference for me.

I forgot to mention mariedean products! This winter I used the red clover leave in and the curl cream, fabulous products!
I was experimenting with other products so I hadn't used them in a while. This stuff is rich, so I only use a tiny bit. It doesn't weigh my hair down and a jar lasts forever. I used a tiny bit of leave in, emulsify and put in my hair...same thing with the curl cream (maybe a tad more than the LI). I then add a gel or jelly. Tonight I used it with biotera gel. My hair is still drying so not sure how this will work in warmer temps. I will try it next with curl keeper. I have a few samples of her other products but haven't really had a chance to test them out except for the coconut detangler, very nice. Anyway, hope you find something that works for you!

I've read about sealing and I'm wondering if this may be what I'm missing. Before I went CG, I would get my best results when I used a serum on my wet hair before I styled. But is was full of silicones, which I have eliminated from my routine. I googled the EO serum and it looks good - is there somewhere you can get this on the ground?

Here's a pick of my first try with curl keeper. I washed my hair tonight with CJDF, RO with tresemme naturals, Oyin hair dew (nickel size amount) for LI and then maybe a quarter size puddle of CK. So far (not completely dry yet), I'm liking it. My hair actually feels very natural; still some frizz and not quite as much hold as I'd like, but very soft and good curl formation. Maybe if I sealed, I would get the results I want. Or maybe I need to use more of the curl keeper or a gel over top.

That looks great! It looks soft and shiny. You may be able to find the EO's serum at whole foods or vitamin shoppe. I would call and see if they carry it first. I bought mine online from vitacost.com. Try sealing, it has made a huge difference for me. I use a couple of puddles of curl keeper. The key for me is to let it air dry for at least ten minutes, longer if possible, for best results. Then i diffuse. Some curlies find they need a gel on top of the curl keeper. I'm really surprised it works alone for me. Everyone's hair is different.

that's interesting that you liked Curl Keeper so much, what with it's glycerin content.
I always hear rave things about it but avoid glycerin like the plague, being in the desert. If you want to keep using CK but don't like the price I suggest doing what many on here have done: using a drugstore brand of personal lube. Weird, but they say it works!
