Closet Curly

After 3 years of being a "closet curly", I decided to come out and let someone style my hair so that I could finally wear it down in public.

As the last, horrific hairdressing experience finally start to recede in my mind, I made that phone call. "Do you cut curly hair?" I inquired, followed by a cautious "I don't blow-dry my hair you know". After a very self-assured answer I let myself get excited over my upcoming appointment.

Well, the day came and it started very well. My hair was washed and smelt like fields of lavender. Unfortunately that was about as good as it got.

Warning number 1: She combed my hair. I don't know how curly hair is supposed to be cut, but combing is just not an option for me.

Warning number 2: As she was snipping away she casually mentioned that her hair was always frizzy and that she didn't like the way it looked. I should have run then.

Warning number 3: She did this funny thing where she cut bits up the entire length of my hair.

The outcome? I suppose I got my moneys worth because I got 3 hairstyles for the price of 1, short and mullet-like in the front, boxy in the middle and scraggly and long down the back. Oh, and now I also have bits of hair sticking out everywhere which look like frizz.

It looks like it's going to be at least another 3 years in the closet for me.

I'm sorry you had a bad hair cut experience. I think we've all been there, you are describing the "thinning shears". They slice bits off your hair all the way up. I've had so many bad hair cuts...
But on this site, I did a search on Salons on Long Island that do curly cuts. I narrowed it down to two salons.. I chose one and have been happy for two years. She cuts my hair dry. Let me know where you live and I can help you find a salon, when you recover!

It's good to hear you managed to find a hairdresser you're happy with! I live in Australia and there's a place here that's recommended by NC curlies but I didn't think I could justify a haircut for that price. I know better now!

I'll probably blow dry/straighten my hair for a year or so until the short bits grow out.

Yes, I believe you were attacked with "thinning shears." That happened to me a lot when I was young. Sorry you had that experience!

I have never had an issue with my hair being thinned I always get it thinned due to my obnoxious amount of hair, I get it thinned and have long layers and pretty short bangs and I love my hair like it I also have it angled around my face I'm sorry you had such a difficult time at the salon
