So. Let me start by saying, I am getting back to NC. I was originally on here when I was 14 or so, and I am now 21.
I believe my hair is 3b. It's curly, thick, has some texture to it, and is very dense. The texture is because I am part Native American, although my hair is red (I'm also part Irish).
Now. I'll admit it, and probably gross some of you out but: I have terrible terrible terrible hair hygiene.
My routine: When going out somewhere (friends etc, I have a disability, so I haven't got a job yet.) I do my hair. Since I have shyness issues, this isn't often.
I take a shower. Comb out the hair trying to do from the bottom up as much as possible. I use a long toothed comb. Then I use conditioner. I was using Deva Curl, but I recently was Dx'd with Celiac disease. That means no wheat, oat, barley, or rye products. Even in conditioners.
So I've been using a cheap brand. I've also been using Cantu Shea Butter break strengthening cure, and Mixed Chicks deep conditioner. I love both.
My hair tangles very very easily. I only have it nice for about one day (two if I can stretch it) i don't understand all this "second day" routine talks. Honestly, I may not wash it for a week or more. I'll get it wet, but I won't comb or anything. Seriously, this *is* gross, I know. I want to change.
My hair is dry, splitty, and unhappy. It grows very very slow, it's about just under my shoulders. I haven't had it cut for four years. I got it straightened, and then cut it myself, Big chop. I was so tired of these inept hair stylists. Lathering my hair with harsh smelly shampoos and chemicals, and then cutting my hair wet so that it becomes a short poofy, triangular mess. So for the last 4 years while battling health issues and depression, I've had no real hair routine. Everyone Ooh's and Ahh's and says to never cut it. Seeing "Brave" with friends was an experience. Random strangers kept comparing me to her.
Sorry for the long post. Anyway, through NC I've found out about a curly hairstylist in my area. Cuts hair dry, knows what she's doing. I read reviews here and on yelp.
I need tons of advice on my hair. I don't know what to do, or what to even ask for. I want to be able to manage it better. I find things like that stressful, and just don't know where to begin. How should I do it before I get there? What should I discuss with her? What should I ask, or ask for her to do? Is there any way curly hair can actually have a "style"??
Much advice needed. Please help!
