just don't know what to do any more....

Ok, I am 42 yrs old and am just totally fed up with my hair. I have very thick 3b hair. I just don't know what to do with it any more. I get my hair cut at Ulta and I have to say they do an OK job. But, I am so tired of hair stylists dictating to me what I can and can't do with my hair. I am tired of them having no idea how to style it after a hair cut. I am tired of them pushing every product on me just because they get commision and not because it will actually make my hair look good. I also SICK TO DEATH of my hair style. But, whenever you ask the stylist if there is something else that can be done to my hair, they look at you like you are insane. If you even suggest getting bangs they literally laugh at you and say you will look like something out of the 1980's. And, I have to say it isn't just the people at ULTA doing this. It is all the stylists I have had for the last 10 yrs.
So, I am asking you, is it me or them? I am starting to think it is time to buy a wig and be done with it. Would love some feedback. Thanks!!!
There are lots of things that you can do. First thing is find another stylist! Someone who knows curly hair and cuts it well. A good hair cut is the foundation for all other things. nc.com has a salon finder Salon Finder - NaturallyCurly.com Maybe you can find a stylist near you that has good reviews from other curlies on the site. A good haircut is the foundation for great hair.

Next, determine your hair properties. Here's a link to help. Live Curly Live Free - Curly Hair Basics nc.com also has a link for properties NaturallyCurly Once you determine your properties look for folks with hair like yours and see what they use (in signatures.) It's the best place to start.

If you want a "style," many of us have curly bobs Curly Bobs Unite! What's to like about it. I've been wearing mine for 4+ years. It's the first time in my 30+ years of curly hair that I feel that I have a style.

I've gone to my stylist for over 30 years. He gives a great cut and does beautiful color work. I always leave wet and style when I get home. It's a small price to pay for hair that looks great for the six weeks between cuts.

KathyMack-thank you for your advice. I really do appreciate it. I am going to research my hair texture more. Unfortunately, I have been going to the "best" stylists in my area for curly hair. All of them tell me the same thing. I always used to where my hair in a bob but now they tell me my face is too full (I've gained some weight) and I can't possible where it that way now.
Sorry to complain so much. I am just beyond frustrated with my hair. Thanks for reaching out to me
A lot of curlies wear bangs. Some like to wear them curlie, others straighten them. If you want bangs, that is your choice, in my opinion, no stylist should dictate to you how you should wear/style your hair. If you are thinking of bangs, you can pin up some of your hair at the length you are considering to get an idea of how they will look on you.

When I was looking for a curly stylist, I couldn't find any in my area listed here, so I checked out the Deva site. There is a list there of Deva trained stylists ( MyDevaCurl - Curly Stylist Finder ). I'm sure Ouidad or other curly specialists would have an equivalent service. Maybe the "best" curly stylists in your area aren't the best stylists for you. It might be time to look around and see what else is available.
Be Happy!

You are a paying customer, you should be able to get whatever hairstyle you want!

Awww, I hope you figure out something with your hair. It sounds frustrating. Good luck!
