No definition above my shoulders - advice?

Hey all! I'm very new to the boards and mod-CG, just recently (within a month) starting to let my hair be curly and trying to figure out what products work for me. My hair is a few inches below APL, and it's 3a curly with great definition towards the bottom, but above the tops of my shoulders or so it's very wavy and fluffy and not defined (and it's basically straight and flat on top down to my ears). I've been doing a little OC as LI, super soaker, then flipping my hair sideways and scrunching what I think is a lot of gel - maybe not enough? - into sopping wet hair, and then plopping. As for gel I've been rotating Arc AnGel, AnGel Light, and LA Looks Sport. But it's always poofy and straighter in the top half. It's been overconditioned for a week or so, but I just got SSRPT in the mail so I did a PT today and I'm thinking of doing some more tomorrow just in the fluffy area to see if it helps any. I've been looking at the avatars of people on this board, and so many of you with long 3a hair have great, defined curls all the way up, so I hope my hair is capable of that. Do you other curlies have any tips or advice? Does this happen to anyone else with long hair?

Thanks!
Liza

Have you tried clipping your roots?
Curly and PROUD!!!

My hair has a mix of low/med/high porosity, and it's medium textured (some are still fine, though!)

I tried it this morning for the first time, but it's tricky...I think I need to practice it to get better results. Thanks!
