Which hair type am I?

I've been soaking up all the information I can lay my hands on this great site. I know that I have fine thickness, low porisity and medium density hair however I can't figure out my hair type. I think I have 3a hair but I get no root curl and the top layer of my hair is more wavy than curly. Thanks in advance

Do you have any long layers to help take some of the weight off? I'd call your type a 2b/2c mixture just by visual type, yes you have some spirals but they look like they don't form until halfway down your shoulders and if you were to cut it to your shoulders it wouldn't curl. Have you ever had shorter hair and does it curl more at shorter lengths or no? A lot of wavies don't get waves/curls until it's longer.

Regardless, it's beautiful and curl type is fun to know but really unimportant when it comes to hair care, and it can also be transient as you improve your hair health.

I like FIA's typing system better because the visual pattern is separated from the texture and density of the hair. In Andre Walker's it's all interconnected. I am not any one of Walker's types, my hair has various sizes of curls and it is fine, it behaves like the 3a description and nothing like most of the wavies describe their hair in the 2 section. But not all of my curls are the sidewalk spirals he describes, some are looser and some are tighter and I can't say there's one dominant pattern. So I don't pay much attention to my hair type when deciding what to use - your hair properties will determine how it reacts to products.
fine, thin, normal/(low?) porosity. Mod-CG. Usually I can't co-wash more than 1x a week, & sometimes I have to use T-Gel in rotation due to scalp issues.

Thanks for replying! I have had my hair shorter before and it barely had a wave. So it confirms that I must be a wavy.

I'll go take a look at FIA's typing system as I had a hard time trying to figure out what hair type was in Andre Walker's system.

^^ I did too, I definitely like FIA's system for determining the visual curl pattern. Looks like you got it in your signature already! Good luck and the 2 board is hoppin' with advice, some days my hair looks more curly and some days my hair is decidedly more wavy but regardless, I post on the 2 board most often because responses and advice are usually so quick!

  • 2c with a strait underneath
  • normal elasticity on top, none on the underneath
  • Fine side of Normal
  • Thick hair
  • Poriosity is a mystery. I think its all over the place.
